The Department of Theatre and Dance at The University of Texas at Austin invites applications for a tenure-track, Assistant Professorin Dance. We are seeking dance artists with demonstrated expertise in African and African Diasporic forms. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to build and teach curricula in/across one or more of the following areas: contemporary and/or traditional dance forms, somatic practices, performance, choreography, improvisation, and other forms with significant connection to the cultural production of Africa and its Diaspora. Our ideal applicant has experience cultivating a robust and generous culture of research, teaching and learning, as well as innovative collaborations across form, content, and context. This position requires candidates to show a trajectory of creative research consistent with the expectations of a tenure track faculty in a tier-one research university, and prefers 3-5 years of teaching experience in professional and/or university settings. This position requires relocation to Austin, Texas.

The Dance Program collaborates with the other programs in the Department of Theatre and Dance: Acting, Directing and Playwriting, Drama and Theatre for Youth and Communities, Theatre Education, Live Design and Production, and Performance as Public Practice.
As an integral part of the thriving creative culture of Austin, Texas, our department offers an array of programs to prepare artists, scholars, and teachers to make profound contributions to theatre and dance through engaging study, interdisciplinary collaboration, and exceptional performance experiences. The department has 35 full-time faculty members and 18 full-time staff members and is housed in well-equipped facilities, which include black box, proscenium, and lab theatres, teaching and practice spaces, and state-of-the-art design and computing labs. The department produces six large scale and numerous small productions per year, including the largest student-driven biennial New Works Festival in the country.

Minimum salary: $80,000. Start Date: August 2024.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Terminal degree in the field
- Creative research profile/trajectory consistent with the expectations of a tenure-track position at a research-focused institution
- Demonstrated contributions to a culturally pluralistic educational and/or artistic environment
- Expertise in African and African Diasporic dance forms
- Ability to build and teach curriculum in/across one or more of the following areas: contemporary and/or traditional dance forms, somatic practices, performance, choreography, improvisation
Preferred Qualifications:
- 3-5 years of teaching experience in university and/or professional settings
- Experience in and knowledge of creative research and pedagogical methods that center social justice and/or liberatory practices
- Experience in and knowledge of methods for promoting student-centered and collaborative learning across graduate and/or undergraduate populations
- Administrative and leadership experience that will support a thriving academic dance program
