Description
The Department of Allied Health Programs at Santa Fe College is seeking a nine (9) month Assistant Professor for the Surgical Technology Program to promote and encourage student success through quality instruction and real world learning experiences beginning Fall 2024.
Under general supervision, the Assistant Professor, Surgical Technology will develop, prepare and teach a variety of Surgical Technology coursework. Areas of instruction include but are not limited to anatomy, pharmacology, surgical procedures and instruments, aseptic technique, medical terminology and clinical practicum. Candidates must have the flexibility to teach at different times and clinical sites throughout the academic year. Full-time faculty have a primary nine (9) month contract based on teaching 15 credit hours in the Fall and 15 credit hours in the Spring; teaching opportunities beyond contractual obligations during the summer may be available for additional compensation based upon departmental need.
Responsibilities and Duties
  • Plan, organize and deliver instruction, evaluate student learning, manage course activities, consult and mentor students and participate in professional development for the improvement of the ST program.
  • Maintain consistent communication with students, clinical assistants, clinical instructors, and clinical sites.
  • Document regular scheduled visits to clinical education centers to assess students' clinical instruction.
  • Provide coordination, direction and guidance to clinical instructors.
  • Maintain clinical records to include student assessments, attendance, site evaluation and clinical proficiencies.
  • Schedule clinical externship, follow up with program graduates and survey local employers to determine the needs of the program.
  • Organize and participate in student recruitment, admissions and advisement initiatives for the ST program.
  • Participate in continuing education to improve instructional skills and stay abreast of trends in the field of Surgical Technology.
  • Ensure compliance with program accreditation standards.
  • Assist in the development of ST academic policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate technological literacy and innovation in the delivery of instruction.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a cohesive academic team.
  • Strictly honor the privacy, security and confidentiality of student records and other sensitive information according to appropriate state, federal and college regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Provide service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible and professional engagement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Reports to: Chair, Allied Health Programs
Qualifications
Required: An Associates degree and certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBTSSA). A minimum of three years of documented work experience either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in Surgical Technology or a combination of both, within the past five years.
Additional Requirements: A criminal background check and drug screening will be conducted. Documentation of immunizations and Basic Life Support certification are required.
Preferred: A bachelor's degree and a certification in central service processing.

  • Organization & Time Management - able to plan, schedule, and organize tasks related to the job to achieve goals within or ahead of established time frames.
  • Relationship Management - able to personally provide high level of interactive service to others, building relationships and addressing identified needs.
  • Systems & Software - proficient level of knowledge of Microsoft Office and/or relevant position software programs.
