Job Title
Assistant Professor of Music Education& Director of Instrumental Studies
Position Summary
Designs and delivers instruction in undergraduate courses offered by the School/ University. Supervises and evaluates student interns and advises students. Participates in all department, various schools, and University-wide tasks and activities. Focus of this position is on teaching and performance, with service to the Department of Music, the university, the community, & the profession.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Prepares lessons and delivers instruction for day, evening, and/or online courses for undergraduate students. | Daily 60%
  2. Teaches support courses for Music Education areas as required (chamber wind and brass ensembles; wind ensemble, arranging; instrumental techniques, conducting and music content certification review, etc.) as assigned. | Daily 60%
  3. Adheres to the established class schedule and office hours. Submits contracts, book requests, syllabi, grades, evaluations, and other required paperwork and reports in a timely manner. | Daily 15%
  4. Conducts research, writes and submits articles for publication in academic journals. Remains knowledgeable of current research activities in respective discipline by reading journal articles, attending conferences, and maintaining relationships with other fellow researchers. | Monthly 5%
  5. Participates in curriculum and program development. | Daily 15%
  6. Directs the Wesleyan Wind Ensemble. Presents varied, appealing and appropriately challenging programs for the ensemble. | Daily 20%
  7. Directs the Ramband and participates at all home games during Football and Basketball seasons. | Daily 15%
  8. Creates and Directs the University Drumline program with goals to develop it into a Marching Band. | Daily 15%
  9. Assists in instrumental ensembles and related music areas as talent, training, and experience permit. | Monthly 15%
  10. Refers students and the public with music issues and/or requests to the appropriate University personnel. | Daily 4%
  11. Advises undergraduate students. | Monthly 10%
  12. Manages instrumental adjunct faculty and instrumental maintenance. | Daily 15%
  13. Supervises and evaluates student interns as necessary. | As needed
  14. Is active as a recruiter for the Department of Music as a whole, and specifically for the instrumental division of the department. Recruits prospective students and participates in scholarship activities. | Monthly 20%
  15. Represents the University by developing and maintaining strong relationships with profit and non-profit organizations. | Monthly 15%
  16. Becomes or resumes active membership in Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) and Texas Band Director's Association. | Monthly 5%
  17. Other duties as assigned by the Dean/Chair of Music Department. | As needed

Qualifications

Education, Certifications and/or Licenses
  • Terminal degree in music, normally expected to be a doctoral degree.
  • Doctoral work in the field of Music Education preferred, other areas of doctoral study considered.

Experience
  • Successful experience at the college level (may include fellowship at the doctoral level) is required.
  • Successful teaching at the secondary level (high school) is also highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge(position requirements at entry):
  • Thorough understanding of Music curriculum and its application in the classroom especially as it relates to the education of Music students.
  • Recognized success as an instrumental ensemble conductor.
  • Display significant knowledge of all Wind and Orchestral Instruments and Repertoire.
  • Familiarity with academic policies and procedures of higher education institutions.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to demonstrate and provide excellent service to both the University and the community.
  • Ability to comply with rules, standards, regulations and laws related to student records.
  • Ability to be discrete in handling confidential matters, while complying with FERPA regulations.
  • Ability to adhere to university and departmental policies and procedures.

Skills and abilities(position requirements at entry):
LANGUAGE SKILLS
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, and/or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, students, and University employees.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
  • Ability to calculate figures & amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra & geometry.

REASONING ABILITY
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
