Job Description:
The Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences in the Cook-Cole College of Arts & Sciences invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position (F0009) at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning in August 2024.
We seek a broadly trained individual who can contribute to our major and minor in Integrated Environmental Sciences and our minor(s) in Geography and/or Geographic Information Science (GIS). Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching courses in both Geography and environmental sciences, or related disciplines, and to candidates whose research can utilize our Baliles Center for Environmental Education at Hull Springs. Teaching responsibilities include courses in global environmental issues, world regional geography, and introductory and advanced courses in Geography and/or environmental sciences. Particular areas of interest for expertise include, but are not limited to, the following: human geography, environmental justice, political ecology, and/or sustainability.
The successful candidate will be provided with start-up funding, dedicated research space in the Chichester Science Building, and access to numerous resources across campus. Our department is well-equipped with modern instrumentation and facilities, including the GIS Lab, Harvill-Stevens Herbarium, Longwood Greenhouse, and the Microscopy Center (which includes a scanning electron microscope). We also utilize the Environmental Education Center at Lancer Park and the Baliles Center for Environmental Education at Hull Springs (a 662-acre waterfront property near the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay with new research and housing facilities for faculty and students). Longwood's Office of Student Research provides funding to support student-faculty research and travel, and the Center for Faculty Enrichment provides professional development resources and training. The candidate also has the opportunity to contribute courses to Longwood's Brock Experience, study abroad/away programs, and the Cormier Honors College.
Requirements:
- Minimum Requirement: Earned Ph.D. by time of appointment in August 2024.
- Required commitment to excellence and innovation in undergraduate teaching, potential to develop a successful research program in an undergraduate setting, and dedication to quality advising of students and supervision of undergraduate research.
- Candidates with demonstrated college teaching ability and commitment to service preferred.
- A demonstrated ability and commitment to working with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and constituents in support of the university mission is preferred.
Additional Information:
