The Department of Education Studies at Chicago State University invites applications for one full-time tenure-track faculty position to begin in the Spring semester 2024 or Fall 2024 at the Assistant Professor level. The successful applicant is expected to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses. Experience, education, and credentials in teaching mathematics is required; with proficiency in technology, science, engineering (STEM) across grades 1-8 and culturally relevant teaching strongly desired.
All faculty positions are governed by the tenets of a collective bargaining agreement. Faculty are hired, evaluated, retained, promoted, and tenured on the basis of conditions covered in the union contract. Primary duties include teaching and related activities assigned during a 9 month academic year. Summer teaching may be available. It is expected that each faculty member engages in all three activities of teaching, research/creative activities and service.
Teaching: Faculty members are expected to teach a minimum of 4 courses per semester. The actual teaching load is based on credit unit equivalencies (referred to as CUEs) governed by the faculty contract. Each faculty has guided autonomy to develop syllabi and teaching materials (ability to organize, analyze and present knowledge or materials) related to courses taught. The
faculty member is also expected to collaborate with other faculty in the development of new courses and/or programs.
This position requires a completed doctorate (Ed.D. or PhD) in a field directly related to the Department of Education Studies, and the Program of Elementary Education specifically. Current licensure in elementary and/or middle level education relevant to the Department of Education Studies is required. The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in professional development activities as well as engage in assessment activities related to accreditation and program evaluation.
Research: Faculty members are expected to engage in research and/or creative activity germane to the academic discipline for which they were hired resulting in submissions of material(s) as works in refereed professional and/or trade-specific publications. The faculty member shall also submit and receive externally awarded grants; submit proposals and present at refereed academic and professional conferences which may or may not be financially supported by the department, college, or university.
Service: Faculty members are expected to serve on committees, programs, and special task forces at the department, college, university, professional and community levels; assume leadership roles over time and as they increase in rank. These activities are not for compensation and have a direct relationship to the employee’s assigned responsibilities within the specific program, department, and college as well as to the university.
Required Education
Earned Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction or any other education related field with focus on Elementary or Middle Grades Education.
ABDs not considered.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Minimum three years as teacher of record at the Elementary or Middle Grades levels.
Experience, education, and credentials in teaching mathematics is required with proficiency in technology, science, engineering (STEM) across grades 1-8 and culturally relevant teaching strongly desired.
Illinois Professional Educator License directly related to the Department of Education Studies and the Programs of Elementary, Middle Level with a content concentration in mathematics required.
A defined scholarly research agenda
Collaborative experiences with public school systems, as well as public and private agencies relevant to the Elementary and Middle Level Grades discipline.
Experience utilizing pedagogies that incorporate active learning; experience working with students from diverse backgrounds; demonstrated ability to collaborate in program development; ability to develop and maintain positive relations with schools and outside agencies; demonstrated engagement in scholarly activities and research, willingness to participate in service activities at the discipline, community and university levels.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in mathematics and technology across grades 1-8.
Evidence of teaching at the college/university level for a minimum of two years;
Experience supervising student teaching and other field experience; and
Experience with preparation for program recognition and/or accreditation.
