Description

The Department of Mathematics & Physics at Iona University is seeking applications for an Assistant Professor of Mathematics to begin in Fall 2024. This is a full-time tenure-track faculty position. For this position, we will give preference to candidates with demonstrated scholarly expertise in data science, statistics, and/or math education.

Iona University and the Department of Mathematics & Physics emphasize teaching excellence. The department offers an undergraduate major and minor in Mathematics, a minor in Physics, and support for mathematics education degrees at the undergraduate and graduate level. The department also offers courses in support of other undergraduate majors and the university core.

The department is committed to creating a student-centered learning environment and to engaging students in mathematics beyond the classroom. Faculty in the department use diverse teaching methods including the use of technology. Class sizes are small with all core classes having 25 or fewer students. Faculty members in the department pursue a broad range of scholarship including: traditional research in mathematics; research with undergraduates; the scholarship of teaching; textbook and software development; and the writing and implementation of internal, state, and national proposals and grants. Responsibilities:

Candidates are expected to participate, consistent with their expertise, in the teaching and ongoing development of the mathematics curriculum. Duties each semester include 12 hours teaching load with additional responsibilities in scholarship and service. Candidates are expected to maintain an active program of scholarly development, broadly defined in the department and university. Employment begins August 2024.

Salary:

Competitive and commensurate with qualifications.

A complete application must include: (1) a cover letter explaining the applicant's suitability for and interest in the position; (2) teaching statement that address the applicant's teaching experience, philosophy, and methodology; (3) research statement addressing the applicant's scholarship interests, experiences, and potential; (4) curriculum vitae; (5) an unofficial copy of graduate transcripts; and (6) three references (with contact information), two of whom are identified as being able to attest to the candidate's teaching effectiveness. After an application is complete, we may request at least three letters of recommendation, with at least two attesting to the applicant's teaching ability and potential.


Deadline:

Review of applications will begin November 15, 2023 and continue until the position is filled or the search is closed. We intend to invite candidates for campus interviews in early 2024.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics received prior to August 2024 (ABD applicants considered); demonstrated effectiveness in undergraduate teaching; evidence of critical, reflective thinking about the teaching and learning of mathematics, and promise of continued professional growth in teaching and scholarship. Candidates must have strong teaching recommendations, commitment to teaching using demonstrably effective methods of instruction and assessment; demonstrated interest in continuing research and publication, and service to the department and to the university. The department is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute through their teaching, scholarship, and/or service to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.
