Purpose
The job of the Assistant Principal - Discipline and Attendance administers school and District policies and regulations as needed, including assurance of due process, campus security and safety, supervision of certificated and classified employees, student discipline, attendance monitoring, and managing specific school programs as assigned. The Assistant Principal will supervise classroom instruction and evaluate teaching performance for assigned curriculum area. The Assistant Principal will assist in creating a total school atmosphere conducive to optimum student progress and participate in the ongoing development and evaluation of the district's educational program.
Qualifications
Required
  1. Valid Arizona teaching and principal certificate.
  1. Master's degree in Education, Administration, or other related field.
  1. Minimum of five (5) years teaching experience at the secondary level.
  1. Minimum three (3) years of leadership experience.
  1. Valid AZ Department of Public Safety (DPS) Identity Verified Print (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  1. Possesses and maintains a First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
  1. Expertise in curriculum and instructional strategies and development; student assessment development and analysis; and instructional technology.
  1. Demonstrated background in instructional leadership and ability to work collaboratively.
  1. Demonstrated leadership and ability to work effectively with various groups, individuals, and a demonstrated ability to organize ideas and present with clarity and conciseness.
  1. Knowledge of the school district and its departments, policies, and procedures, preferred.
  1. Knowledge of dropout intervention best practices that lead to connection to the school community and student success.
  1. Ability to assume responsibility, exercise sound judgment, and handle confidential material and information.

Preferred
  1. Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Essential Functions
  1. Report directly to the campus Principal.
  1. Assists the principal in the overall administration of the school.
  1. Serves as a principal in the absence of the regular principal as assigned.
  1. Administers and maintains discipline throughout the student body.
  1. Assists in the implementation of the District-approved program of instruction: Assists in creating a total school atmosphere conducive to optimum student progress, participating in the ongoing development and evaluation of the District's educational programs, assists in implementing effective guidance and health services for all students, and assists in interpreting data for program improvement.
  1. Responsible for personnel management functions of the school: assists in making recommendations regarding the selection of school personnel, assists in interviewing prospective teachers for assigned curriculum area, supervise classroom instruction and evaluates teaching performance for assigned curriculum area, supervise classified staff, evaluates achievement and placement of students in assigned curriculum area, coordinates Summer School program as needed, serves as member of the textbook selection committee for assigned area, assists in developing effective lines of communication and staff input in educational planning, prepares budget in assigned curriculum areas as directed by the principal.
  1. Participate in student study teams, 504 planning, and IEP process as needed.
  1. Monitors the academic achievement of students and makes recommendations for interventions or alternative placements.
  1. Responsible for general administrative functions such as maintaining accurate records and preparing reports.
  1. Assists with the management and implementation of computerized attendance, data management, scheduling, and grading system.
  1. Participate in the development of policies as a member of the administrative team and interpret school and District programs, policies, and procedures to students, staff, parents, and community.
  1. Assists in safety inspections and safety drill practice activities/safety plan preparation.
  1. Assisting in the development and maintenance of productive community relations.
  1. Assumes a leadership role in change and revitalization projects.
  1. Actively pursue professional growth activities for staff under their supervision.
  1. Supervises campus, athletic events, and activities as assigned.
  1. Participates in coordination of Site testing.
  1. Assists with graduation activities and ceremonies.
  1. Participate in district departmental meetings for the purpose of developing a stronger department.
  1. Responsible for overseeing Student Attendance: ensure Governing Board student attendance policy, rules, and regulations are followed; oversee the accurate reporting of student attendance; conduct student/parent meetings regarding multiple absences; oversee the homebound and chronic illness processes.
  1. Responsible for overseeing Student Discipline: ensure Governing Board student discipline policy, rules, and regulations are followed; maintain accurate discipline records in a timely manner; process referrals in a timely manner; monitor off campus/on campus suspensions; prepare materials for long term suspensions/expulsions; and ensure accurate AZ Safe Schools reporting.
  1. Responsible for overseeing Campus Safety and Security: oversee site emergency plan; monitor fire drill/evacuation plan/lock down procedures; supervise health services/nurse; oversee campus security; and supervise the SRD/SRO.
  1. Attend all student hearings and MD meetings (SPED).
  1. Maintain the Student Procedures Handbook.
  1. Oversee the early intervention/prevention programs.
  1. Assist in extracurricular supervision.
  1. Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: knowledge of classroom management, collaboration, communication, curriculum development, lesson planning, curriculum management software, curriculum mapping, education technology, instruction, leadership, pedagogy, andragogy, and training skills; knowledge of federal, state, county, local, and District codes; knowledge of federal, state, county, local, and district policies, regulations, and laws.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather and/or collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to direct others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with similar types of data; and utilize job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is high. Responsibility
Responsibilities include working as an Administrator using standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; tracking budget expenditures. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the organization's services.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally move up to 120 pounds. Generally, the job requires 50% sitting, 15% walking, and 35% standing. The job is performed under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. Working conditions may require work to be performed in both the field with extreme weather conditions and in an indoor environment with minimal temperature variations and some hazardous conditions. The employee will regularly work indoors and outdoors. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to extreme. Travel between District campuses and to locations outside the District is required. The working hours are somewhat flexible as the job may require hours beyond normal business hours.

Evaluation: This position will be evaluated annually as outlined in Governing
Board Policy Manual.
