JOB DESCRIPTION
CLASSIFICATION: ADMINISTRATIVE
JOB TITLE: ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
REPORTS TO: PRINCIPAL
SALARY: ADMINISTRATOR
CALENDAR: 10.5 MONTHS
Job Goal
The Assistant Principal assist the Principal in all aspects of the Principal position including the instructional program, facilities operation and maintenance, school/community relations, business affairs, and the utilization and development of staff and faculty.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master Degree and Administrative Coursework in Education Related Field
  • Appropriate Arizona administrative certification
  • Demonstrated classroom teaching ability: minimum three years teaching experience preferred
  • Knowledge of standards and researched-based instruction
  • Successful administrative experience

Core Job Functions
Personnel/Leadership
  • Serve in the stead of the Principal in his/her absence.
  • Promote positive action toward the realization of school goals through efficient procedures, academic and extra curricular programs, and active engagement of staff, students, parents, and community.
  • Develop a strong sense of community through effective communication and participation in order to foster positive human relations and high morale.
  • Recognize and promote exceptional efforts of the staff and student body.
  • Implement and enforce board policy and administrative regulations.
  • Supervise in compliance with District policies all staff for which he/she has responsibility.
  • Participate in the selection of quality instructional faculty, including but not limited to:
  • Recruitment efforts.
  • Retention of current faculty and staff to the Superintendent.
  • Hiring new personnel to fill vacancies.
  • Effectively communicate to staff to keep them informed.
  • Maintain required formal evaluation procedures for all staff under their supervision.
  • Develop an individual program of improvement for each member of his/her staff as needed, including but not limited to:

o Citation of areas which require improvement.
o A program of improvement individualized to encourage growth to maximum potential for each staff member.
o A follow-up program to assess progression toward cited individual goals.
Student Achievement
  • Assist the Principal in establishing goals and high expectations for teaching and learning.
  • Assist with the planning, coordination, and evaluation of teaching and learning as part of the Administrative team.
  • Develop a master schedule of classes to meet the needs of students and satisfy statutory requirements.
  • Maintain a learning environment that encourages an appreciation of cultural and ethnic diversity.Provide resources to support the classroom teacher in effective instruction.
  • Keep abreast of current research and consider the implementation of innovative strategies and programs, which will benefit students.
  • Communicate with parents to inform them regarding curriculum issues and student progress.
  • Utilize pertinent sources of information, e.g., surveys, test scores, etc. to determine the effectiveness of the instructional program and to lead staff in making changes when needed.
  • Establish and maintain programs to support students who have not mastered state standards.
  • Regularly review lesson plans and classroom activities to ensure appropriate use of instructional time.

Professional Development
  • Keep current with educational developments and literature in the field of education and participate in the affairs of state and national professional societies devoted to the advancement of public education.
  • Set high standards of performance for self and others. Attend meetings and conferences, which promote professional growth and will benefit the district.
  • Maintain communication with other agencies and school districts to share and receive information of effective practices and extended support.
  • Promote and participate in teacher learning and development.
  • Recommend and provide professional staff development programs aligned with student learning.
  • Mutually identify professional goals for individual staff members that will support development of quality skills and traits.

Student Affairs
  • Establish and maintain maximum visibility to and rapport with the student body.
  • Establish, maintain, and monitor procedures designed to ensure a safe and orderly environment.
  • Provide support and appropriate services to students with special needs.
  • Maintain complete and timely records on each student, including attendance, transcripts, assessment, and other District and State required data.
  • Handle disciplinary actions as the Principal may direct.
  • Assist with due-process procedures for those students where their performance warrants individualized special attention.
  • Maintain an orderly climate which develops self-discipline in each student in the school.
  • Coordinate and direct co- and extra-curricular activities to supplement the academic instructional program as the Principal may direct.
  • Assume responsibility for the proper attendance of all students as the Principal may direct.
  • Coordinate necessary activities with the administrations of "feeder" schools to promote transition.
  • Establish and attend special events held to recognize student achievement.

Business
  • Develop and maintain an effective program of cost reduction to insure budgetary compliance and the most efficient use of resource dollars.
  • Create and implement procedures to inventory and secure all school district property as the Principal may direct.

Facilities
  • Effectively utilize and maintain plant facilities in order to provide an appropriate learning environment and reasonable health and safety considerations for students and staff.
  • Assist in the daily utilization of school facilities for both academic and non-academic purposes.
  • Insure that the facilities are open for operation of classes and activities as necessary.
  • Coordinate emergency plant problems with the district offices and appropriate agencies as the Principal may direct.
  • Compliance with all state and federal regulatory agencies.

School/Community Relations
  • Coordinate support services external to the school (law enforcement, social services, etc.)
  • Support an organization of parents to support all school programs.
  • Maintain close contact and rapport with all interested parties, including students, staff, parents and the community concerning the operation of the school and instructional program.
