Job description

SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent directs and participates in Golf Course maintenance on a daily basis. The Assistant is responsible for administering employee training, keeping all training records, and filling the role of superintendent when needed. The most important duty of the assistant is to be a direct communication link between the Grounds Crew and the Golf Course Superintendent.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Monitors operation of the golf maintenance department, including scheduling, agronomic concerns, employee safety and equipment maintenance.
- Supervises crew and course maintenance in absence of Superintendent.
- Chemical applications, record keeping, proper mixing and calibration.
- Lead crew meetings to assign duties and specific directions of daily operations.
- Oversees completion of work assignments by staff and assists with field decisions; engaging with all levels of staff.
- Performs procedural, safety, and equipment training for Juniper Preserve staff.
- Supervises and participates in daily course setup and projects, which may include: irrigation duties, construction projects, and fertilizer/pesticide applications - ensuring daily tasks are completed by the end of each day.
- Participates in annual review and planning surrounding all practices and procedures.
- Participates in winterizing, pressurization, and daily operation of Toro irrigation system, including repair and maintenance to all water lines, valves and pump stations.
- Inventory and maintenance of irrigation and chemical storage areas.
- Participates in recruiting, training, planning, assigning, directing work, evaluating performance, rewarding, disciplining associates, including interns; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- Daily communication with Juniper Preserve staff regarding course and tournament setup, maintenance practices, events, etc.
- Winter time equipment operation, repair and maintenance; including snow removal and plowing.
- Reads, understands and keeps current up-to-date on Safety Data Sheets.
- Willingness to work flexible hours.
- Able to effectively handle multiple tasks.
- Incorporates safe work practices in job performance.
- Regular and reliable attendance.
- Maintains a professional standard at Juniper Preserve including, but not limited to, appearance, interaction with members, associates, guests of the club, verbal discussions and written correspondence. Does not discuss work related issues with members and resort guests.
- Supports and adheres to the CORE Values (ie. “The T.R.I.P.”) The Mission Statement, Service Fundamentals, and Guest Service Philosophy as defined by the company.
- Maintains positive attitude and the flexibility to take on new and different tasks as assigned by the Golf Course Superintendent and Director of Agronomy.
QUALIFICATIONS

- A Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy/Horticulture/Plant/Soil Sciences or equivalent knowledge. This may also include an Associate Degree in Turfgrass Science.
- Must have experience in all phases of Golf Course management and turf culture. This includes a working knowledge of planting and culture of turf grasses and ornamentals, proper use of fertilizers and soil conditions, pest diagnosis and control methods, drainage systems, watering practices and irrigation systems.
- Assistant Superintendent should be licensed in pesticide usage or have ability to obtain within 90 days an Oregon Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s license and have knowledge of environmental laws and safety.
- Knowledge of the game of golf, along with the ability to communicate with members and guests.
- Ability to schedule and supervise work to achieve the most efficient use of labor and equipment.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
- Ability to effectively present (written and oral) information and respond to questions from employees, managers, members and the general public.
- Spanish speaking skills are encouraged.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- The ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises all seasonal staff and 2nd Assistant Superintendent.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Oregon Commercial Pesticide Applicators license or ability to obtain, and a valid driver’s license.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
May on occasion be required to travel for business related purposes.
WORKING CONDITIONS
May include both inside and outside shifts.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Ability to communicate via telephone and/or two-way radio, respond to the general public, and converse with staff. Ability to hear fire alarms and emergency equipment.
