CLASSIFICATION TITLE
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR - STUDENT SERVICES
SUMMARY
Assists Director in managing the activities of the Sahuarita Unified School District Student Services Department (including: Special Education, ELL, 504, Gifted and Professional School Counseling)
REPORTS TO: Director of Student Services
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Master's degree in special education or related field
  • Arizona Special Education Certificate with Structured English Immersion (SEI) endorsement or Professional Licensure
  • Three years of experience in special education administration.
  • Experience in both elementary and secondary education.
  • Experience training staff.
  • Experience developing and implementing specially-designed instruction.
  • Experience working with advocates and facilitating complex IEP-related meetings.
  • Demonstrated experience in creating, organizing and supervising instructional programs.
  • Evidence of successful experience in communication with school system personnel, students, parents and the community in promoting school-community relations.
  • Record of successful experience in working with a diverse population including students with linguistic and cultural variety and/or within the school and community.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience writing IEPs and 504 Plans.
  • Experience developing and implementing BIPs.
  • Experience with AZELLA and/or ELPA testing.
  • AZ State Principal or Administrator Certification

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
THE LIST OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS IS NOT EXHAUSTIVE AND MAY BE SUPPLEMENTED.
  • Acts as the administrative designee for the director and helps to supervise and evaluate assigned Student Services employees to include, but not limited to, occupational and physical specialists, social workers, psychologists, speech-language pathologists, extended resource teachers and office support staff.
  • Assists director in collaborating with ELL Coordinator regarding ELL services and AZELLA testing.
  • Assists director in collaborating with Gifted Teacher and school psychologists regarding Gifted Testing and Services.
  • Mediates in multi-disciplinary conferences with parents Of Students who have been referred for special education evaluation when there are dissenting opinions on eligibility, placement, services.
  • Assists director in oversight and management of Student Services divisions (Special Education, 504, Professional School Counseling, Gifted, ELL)
  • Participates in MET, IEP and MDR Meetings and helps to facilitate difficult conversations with teams/parents/advocates.
  • Assists director in researching concerns by parents, staff, OCR, state agencies, attorneys, etcetera. Assists director in counseling staff regarding related responsibilities and obligations. Helps to coordinate mutually acceptable solutions.
  • Represents the District to organizations such as the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind, alternative programs and community agencies. Participates in related team meetings.
  • Assists the director in interpreting relevant federal, state and district policies and regulations; advises parents, administrators and teachers of the relevance of their individual roles. Develops and provides training, coaching mentoring.
  • Assists director in serving as a liaison for site administrators regarding Student Services programming.
  • Assists director in representing District Child Find and Special Education obligations to public and private districts and homeschools for the purpose of evaluating/serving students.
  • Assists director in reviewing staff referrals Of Students for special education program consideration.
  • Helps to ensure timelines for student evaluation and placement are met in accordance with special education mandates.
  • Coordinates with Director and MTSS team regarding development and implementation of district-wide MTSS system.
  • Serves as liaison with site 504 coordinators regarding development and implementation of 504 plans.
  • Assists with Part B and Part C Grant application and budget.
  • Provides staff development as appropriate and in coordination with director and with district professional development department.
  • Coordinates with director and other district leadership to authorize changes for special education services to a more restrictive setting and the allocation of other resources.
  • Assists director in compliance oversight.
  • Leads regular and on-going site team meetings/trainings regarding special education topics (e.g. laws, regulations, state guidance, district procedures, etc.)
  • Consults with site leadership on teacher performance in special education programs.
  • Assists director in conducting classroom observations and provides relevant coaching and resources to teachers. Shares relevant information with site leadership.
  • Assists in monitoring special education student participation in state and district testing.
  • Assists director in ensuring compliance with State Requirements for students in residential or day treatment programs.
  • Assists director in administration of Special Education Extended School Year Program and compensatory programs.

MENTAL TASKS
Communicates. Comprehends. Performs functions from written and oral instructions and from observing others. Evaluates written materials. Reads.
PHYSICAL TASKS
Work involves the performance of duties where physical exertion is not normally required to perform all aspects of the job. Assistance is available as required to perform physically demanding tasks. Work involves sitting for extended periods of time, requires moving from one location to another, reaching, stooping, bending, and holding and grasping objects. Visual weakness must not prohibit the performance of assigned duties. Verbal communicative ability may be required of public contact positions.
EQUIPMENT, AIDS, TOOLS, MATERIALS
Uses office equipment such as telephone, computer, printer and copier. May use special needs adaptive devices.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Indoor office environment. Contact with employees, students and public. Travel to community and school sites.
CONTROL, SUPERVISION
Supervisory control of staff.
