Job Description
This position assists in the planning, organizing, and coordinating of the activities and staff including solid waste collection and recycling, fleet maintenance, and street maintenance. Other duties include: assisting in the selection, promotion, training, counseling, and disciplining of department personnel; performing employee evaluations; maintaining communications with all other City departments, divisions, co-workers, and the public; assisting with and writing grants for departmental funding; preparing and maintaining files and records; preparing various reports such as personnel schedules, time records, disciplinary forms, accident reports, safety, and training documentation; performing inspections of the condition of streets, sidewalks, curbs, and gutters; making assessments for work repairs needed; overseeing snow and ice removal programs; maintaining inventory of equipment; performing the duties of the Director of Public Works in their absence.
Hours: Monday-Friday; first shift.
To Compete in the Selection Process: High school diploma/GED and moderate experience in Public Works administration with some supervisory experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Thorough knowledge of civil engineering as applied to Public Works operations; modern management practices; City policies and procedures; hazards and respective safety precautions. Ability to plan, direct, and review the work of subordinates; interpret community needs for Public Works improvements; communicate effectively; prepare written reports; and establish and maintain effective working relationships. Valid NC CDLs or the ability to obtain one within six months of hire.
