SUMMARY:

The Assistant Director of Nursing plays a pivotal role in ensuring the health and well-being of our students. Working closely with the Director of Nursing, this role involves providing clinical leadership, overseeing health care protocols, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to deliver comprehensive care. The Assistant Director of Nursing will also participate in administrative and strategic planning to enhance the quality of healthcare services provided.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Clinical Leadership:

  • Collaborate with the Director of Nursing to establish and maintain evidence-based clinical practices.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care plans tailored to individual student needs.
  • Supervise and mentor nursing staff, ensuring competency and adherence to protocols.
  • Conduct regular nursing rounds, oversee medication administration, and ensure proper documentation.

Healthcare Management:

  • Oversee the management of students' medical conditions, including diabetes, seizures, food allergies, g-tubes, j-tubes, and other complex medical needs.
  • Coordinate with medical specialists and consultants to ensure comprehensive medical care.
  • Monitor student health records, track medical trends, and update care plans as needed.
  • Provide guidance on infection control practices and emergency response protocols.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with teachers, therapists, residential staff, and parents to ensure a holistic approach to student care and education.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to discuss student progress, challenges, and individualized care plans.
  • Serve as a resource for staff regarding medical protocols, interventions, and student-specific needs.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Assist in developing and implementing policies, procedures, and guidelines for the Health Services department.
  • Participate in budget planning and resource allocation related to nursing services.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of student health records, incidents, and nursing interventions.

Professional Development:

  • Stay current with the latest developments in nursing practices, technology, and medical advancements related to students' complex medical conditions.
  • Engage in continuous education and training to enhance skills and knowledge relevant to the field.

On-Call Responsibilities:

  • Participate in on-call rotation as required, providing guidance and support to nursing staff during off-hours or emergencies.
  • Participate in medication administration rounds during times of staffing difficulties.

FIDUCIARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Assistant Director of Nursing's fiduciary responsibilities are integral to maintaining the financial stability of the healthcare services provided while upholding the organization's commitment to ethical and responsible financial management. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Ethical Stewardship: Uphold the highest ethical standards in financial decision-making, demonstrating transparency, honesty, and accountability in all financial matters.

Resource Utilization: Collaborate with the nursing team to ensure appropriate staffing levels, managing overtime expenses, and optimizing staff allocation based on patient (student) needs.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Assistant Director of Nursing is responsible for the overall supervision, direction, coordination, and evaluation of the nursing staff. This role involves the direct supervision of non-supervisory employees and encompasses various supervisory duties, carried out in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. The Assistant Director of Nursing carries out these supervisory responsibilities with a focus on enhancing patient (student) care, fostering professional growth, maintaining a positive work environment, and ensuring compliance with organizational standards and legal requirements. Key responsibilities include:

Staff Supervision: Oversee and direct the nursing team, including registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, certified nursing assistants, and other healthcare professionals. Ensure the effective and efficient delivery of patient care services.

Recruitment and Hiring: Working with the Director of Nursing, participates in the recruitment process by interviewing and selecting qualified candidates for nursing positions.

Performance Management: In collaboration with and under the Director of Nursing, appraise and assess the job performance of Nursing staff through regular evaluations. Provide constructive feedback, set performance goals, and identify areas for improvement.

Work Assignment: Assign and delegate nursing responsibilities based on individual skills, competencies, and workload distribution. Ensure equitable workload distribution among the nursing team.

Performance Recognition: Recognize and reward exceptional performance within the nursing team. Implement recognition programs and acknowledge contributions that align with the organization's values.

Disciplinary Action: In collaboration with and under the Director of Nursing, address performance issues and misconduct in a fair and consistent manner. Administer disciplinary actions when necessary, ensuring compliance with organizational policies and legal guidelines.

Training and Development: Plan and implement comprehensive orientation and training programs for new nursing staff. Provide ongoing education and development opportunities to enhance the skills and knowledge of the team.

Work Assignment: Assign and delegate nursing responsibilities based on individual skills, competencies, and workload distribution. Ensure equitable workload distribution among the nursing team.

Performance Recognition: Recognize and reward exceptional performance within the nursing team and acknowledge contributions that align with the organization's values.

Problem Resolution: Investigate and resolve conflicts, complaints, and other issues that arise among nursing staff. Facilitate open communication and mediate conflicts to maintain a harmonious work environment.

Delegation: Delegate authority and responsibilities appropriately within the nursing team. Foster a sense of ownership and accountability for tasks and patient (student) care.

Policy Adherence: Ensure that nursing staff adhere to organizational policies, procedures, and protocols. Stay informed about regulatory changes and industry standards to ensure compliance.

Collaboration: Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated patient care and effective communication across departments. Foster teamwork and facilitate information sharing.

Emergency Response: Prepare nursing staff for emergency situations by conducting drills, providing training, and establishing protocols for quick and effective responses.

Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process improvements, workflow efficiencies, and patient care enhancements. Collaborate with the Director of Nursing to implement changes.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Current RN license with a minimum of 3 years of Nursing experience.

Educational Credentials: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution is preferred. Master’s degree in nursing or healthcare administration is a plus.

Experience in pediatric nursing, preferred, in a school or residential setting, preferred.

Strong knowledge of Nursing practices for individuals with IDD and complex medical conditions.

An active member of the DDNA with plans to become certified, preferred.

Experience with medical conditions such as diabetes, seizures, food allergies, g-tubes, and j-tubes.

Excellent communication skills to effectively interact with students, families, staff, and medical professionals.

Leadership skills to guide nursing staff and coordinate interdisciplinary care.

Ability to make critical decisions in emergency situations.

Proficient in electronic medical records (EMR) systems, preferred.

A commitment to providing compassionate, patient (student)-centered care.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Language: Proficient in English; conversational capacity in Portuguese or Spanish preferred, but not necessary.

Reading Skills: Possesses the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general nursing periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations. Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of complex written materials.

Writing Skills: Demonstrates the ability to write clearly, professionally, and comprehensively. Uses accurate spelling, grammar, and syntax to effectively communicate ideas and information.

Computer Skills: Exhibits strong computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Power Point, and

Outlook. Skilled in using email communication platforms.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Registered Nurse (RN) License: Must hold an active and unrestricted Registered Nurse license in the state of Massachusetts, maintaining compliance with all state regulations and requirements.

State-Required Certifications: Any additional certifications, licenses, or registrations necessary to practice as an Assistant Director of Nursing in a Massachusetts healthcare or educational setting.

Nursing Leadership Certification: Preferred certification in nursing leadership or administration, such as Nurse Executive (NE-BC) or Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML), demonstrating a commitment to professional growth in nursing management.

Valid Driver's License: Possession of a valid driver's license with a clean driving record, as travel between locations or off-campus activities may be required.

CPR Instructor Certification: Preferred certification as a CPR instructor, enabling the ability to provide CPR training and certifications to nursing staff.

Diabetes Management Certification: Preferred certification in diabetes management or education, particularly relevant to supporting students with complex medical conditions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
