Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON)

JOB SUMMARY:

Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) is responsible for the nursing team and quality of patient care in the absence of the Director of Nursing (DON). The ADON supervises, analyzes, delegates and evaluates nursing services to maintain quality standards of care and advise medical staff, department heads, and Administrator in matters related to nursing services. ADON also assumes responsibility in areas of Nursing administration, personnel administration, employee recruitments and retention, staff development, family, resident, and community relations.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

· First and most important responsibility as a leader is to make those who report to you, and your colleagues BETTER.

· Plan, organize, direct, supervise, and evaluate all nursing services provided in the facility to achieve desired clinical, risk management and financial outcomes.

· Ensure nursing department services follow federal, state, and local standards and regulations and implementation of Villa Nursing Core Programs.

· Follow all Villa policies and procedures and JACHO standards where applicable.

· Assist DON in managing clinical operations of the nursing department.

· Plan and assign workload as well as lunches and rest breaks to nursing staff on shift basis and per facility protocol.

· Supervise and guide nursing staff on their daily job duties.

· Identify department issues and recommend corrective actions.

· Prepare written evaluations of assigned employees.

· Enforce facility policies with authority to issue Disciplinary Action Reports as needed, including employee suspension for rule(s) violation.

· Assist in department budget preparation and expense management assignments to achieve financial outcomes.

· Analyze audit results and implement audit recommendations to DON and Administrator.

· Coordinate Infection Control, Performance Improvement, and other concurrent review functions of the facility.

· Address and resolve patient complaints promptly. Verify that follow through on patient and/or family complaint related to nursing care has been resolved to their satisfaction.

· Receive and resolve employee complaints in a professional manner.

· Work with Regional and National leaders to continuously improve the quality of resident care.

· Ensure that nursing staffs perform assigned duties accurately and timely.

· Assist in recruiting, interviewing, training, and orientation of new hires.

· Evaluate performance of Nursing department and recommend improvements.

· Ensure the maintenance of licensure status for all nursing staff.

· Provide on-site job training to nursing staff to meet department goals.

· Ensure necessary equipment, supplies, and staffing are available for the delivery of the prescribed resident care.

· Ensure physicians make resident visits as required.

· Ensure each resident’s RAI/IPOC process is carried out on a timely basis.

· Responsible for providing oversight in maintaining, monitoring and evaluation of records and designation of Nursing programs essential in the care of the residents, to include but not limited to as follows:

§ Maintenance of and investigation and follow through on accidents/incident reports as assigned.

§ Maintenance, monitoring, and evaluation of infection control program.

§ Restraint program and rehab services.

§ Psychotropic drug program.

§ Skin Care Program.

§ Nutritional Program.

§ Pain Management Program

§ Evaluation of all admissions and discharge records. Strategic plans or program development for improved outcomes to reduce unnecessary returns to acute care.

§ Controlled drugs.

§ In-service programs.

§ Dietary recommendations, pharmacy recommendations, laboratory services, podiatrist visit, and ophthalmology visits.

· Oversee Minimum Data Set (MDS) and Care plans.

· Meet the Medicare needs and requirements by attending Medicare meetings.

· Participate in the coordination of resident services through departmental and appropriate staff committee meetings (Quarterly Quality Assurance and Assessment Pharmacy, Infection Control, and Resident Care Policy and Procedure meetings).

· Attends and participates in in-service training, performance improvement (“PI”) committees and other meetings as scheduled and directed.

· Perform nursing rounds upon entering the building daily. Check each nursing unit for appropriate staffing, census, unstable residents, accident, and incident reports, etc.

· Maintain professional competence through continuing education.

· Increase professional growth by attending seminars and identify training opportunities to keep informed of new guidelines involving Medicare/Medicaid, IDPH.

· Mentor nursing leaders and prepare for succession planning of the role.

· Review pressure sores weekly, evaluate treatments, and all associated documentation.

· Ensure all documentation has been initiated (MD orders, Initial Assessment, Nursing Care Plan, etc.).

· Serve on facility Quality Improvement Team as instructed.

· Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and enforce facility proper PPE use.

· Other duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing or the facility Administrator.
