Responsibilities
GENERAL PURPOSE:
The University of Rochester's Teaching Center (TC) seeks an Assistant Director of Instructional Development to support faculty in learning and applying evidence-based instructional practices. Reporting to the Assistant Dean and Director of the TC, the Assistant Director conceptualizes, plans, executes, and assesses evidence-based Instructional Development programming responsive to individual faculty members, academic departments, graduate student teaching assistants and instructors, and institutional initiatives.
The Teaching Center provides a range of Instructional Development programming that includes active learning, course design, and grant support. The TC is housed within the research-focused School of Arts, Science & Engineering (AS&E), where approximately 800 instructors teach 5,800 undergraduates and 1,400 graduate students. AS&E awards degrees in a full spectrum of liberal arts disciplines with an emphasis on STEM fields.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching Programs and Web Content for Early Career Instructors
  • Designs, implements, and evaluates a new early career program for instructors. In consultation with the TC director and the TC Faculty Advisory board, determines sequence and structure of needed support, drawing on internal needs assessment data, peer benchmarks, and best practices. Identifies the resources needed to execute the program.
  • Designs, implements, and evaluates a new peer classroom mutual observation program (e.g., teaching triangles) that includes new and senior instructors. In consultation with the TC director and the TC Faculty Advisory Board, identifies appropriate observational protocols, transferable characteristics of peer classroom mutual observation programs at peer institutions, and needed resources.
  • Develops, deploys, and evaluates web-based content that supports instructors in identifying and adopting evidence-based instructional practices. Hires and trains graduate student employees to assist with content creation.
  • In conjunction with TC director and staff, co-designs, implements, and evaluates the new instructor teaching orientation program
Graduate Student Teaching Assistant, Instructor, and Future Faculty Support
  • Plans, implements, and evaluates graduate TA training program using a train-the-trainer model, including recruiting, hiring, and training graduate students to deliver orientation training for new graduate TAs (in conjunction with AS&E Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs)
  • Plans, implements, and evaluates course design program for new graduate instructors with an emphasis on the compressed summer course format
  • Designs, implements, and evaluates a graduate student teaching recognition citation program
  • Hires and trains graduate student employees to conduct themed graduate TA drop-in support sessions or other teaching preparation programming for graduate students
  • Hires and trains graduate student employees to develop TC website content that promotes evidence-based teaching for graduate student teaching assistant, instructors, and future faculty
Teaching Programs and Services for Instructors
  • As needed, plans, implements, and evaluates Instructional Development programming such as workshops, learning communities, and instructional grant programs
  • Conducts teaching consultations
  • Conducts classroom teaching observations
  • Conducts mid-semester course evaluations
Program Logistics
  • Co-develops TC budget
  • Contributes to assessment of TC programming within existing framework. Collects, manages, and analyzes confidential internal data, external benchmarking, and published research to inform ongoing iterative program development and improvement
  • Designs and implements outreach and recruitments activities to promote graduate student, instructor, and departmental participation in instructional programming
  • Creates and maintains web content for Instructional Development programming
Leadership and General Duties
  • Advises TC and AS&E leadership on programming and practices to improve the quality of education for AS&E students
  • Serves on TC, AS&E, and/or UR committees
  • Participates in internal TC professional development activities and pursues independent professional development to support Instructional Development programming
Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree required
  • PhD or EdD preferred
  • One year of Instructional Development or teaching and learning support experience required
  • Two to five years' experience in designing and delivering Instructional Development programming, preferably in a research university setting preferred
  • or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong project management skills, including ability to prioritize and manage multiple complex projects, coordinate with partners, and initiate and execute appropriate timelines required.
  • Ability to establish strong working partnerships with diverse faculty, staff, and students and with institutional units such as academic departments required.
  • Ability to collect, manage, and analyze confidential internal data, external benchmarking, and published research to design, implement, and evaluate programming and outreach initiatives that proactively advance evidence-based, high-quality instructional practice in AS&E required.
  • Background or coursework in education research, including basic statistics preferred.
  • Experience working with STEM faculty, working in a STEM field, or other STEM background preferred.
  • Ability to identify and explain effective pedagogical practices that utilize educational technology tools preferred.

Pay Range
Pay Range: $62,200 - $93,300 Annually
The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
