Background
The mission of Duke Capital Partners (DCP) is to support the global Duke entrepreneurial community with an investment platform and co-investment fund that engages and leverages the power of the global Duke network. The DCP operational team and investment platform exist within Duke's Office for Translation & Commercialization at Duke University. The DCP team partners with Duke-affiliated investors to source and curate investment opportunities in Duke affiliated companies.
DCP investors invest directly in portfolio companies. The DCP team also operates the Duke Innovation Fund (DIF), which invests alongside DCP and augments the capital available for portfolio companies. A key aspect of Duke Capital Partners' approach is the active engagement and matching of DCP member expertise with portfolio companies to support growth and success. Occupational Summary
The Duke Capital Partners Assistant Director will play a key role in our mission of connecting Duke investors with Duke entrepreneurs around the world. S/he will plan, analyze, implement and monitor investment processes and assure the ongoing delivery of high quality services to investor members, many of whom are current or prospective high level donors. The Assistant Director will lead the achievement of the network's goals related to making and managing investments. This position will report to the Duke Capital Partners Managing Director.
Work Performed
Oversight of deal management. Planning and implementing all aspects of the deal process including investment sourcing, screening, diligence, analysis and decision-making processes.
Investment Assessment. Screening potential investments for fit with DCP investment criteria, performing pitch deck review, company assessment, and general due diligence as necessary.
Portfolio Management. Monitoring and reporting on progress of portfolio companies and providing regular portfolio reports to the Operating Team.
Interfacing with Duke Capital Partners member investors. Providing frequent outreach and personalized service to Duke Capital Partners members with regards to investment process, deal diligence logistics and operational questions.
Managing various technology platforms, including internal tools and platforms and the Duke Capital Partners website. Managing systems and processes that drive the investment diligence process, the development of internal communications for members, and the distribution of external communications regarding portfolio and other organizational news.
Planning and executing events including annual meetings, regional pitch events and company pitch presentations.
Recruiting, training, assigning tasks to and supervising the Duke Capital Partner graduate and professional Associates.
Performing other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training:
Work requires a Master's degree in a related field.
Experience:
Work requires 5 years of experience in a related field.
OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
Skills: The ideal candidate should have
  • Experience with, or desire to become proficient on the financing of early-stage companies
  • Demonstrated interest in the venture capital asset class
  • Experience in an early-stage life science environment preferred
  • Degree or non-degree training in venture capital preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate successfully with diverse constituencies and all types of people is essential
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple activities simultaneously
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • High level of initiative and motivation
  • Strategic mindset to identify opportunities that can be leveraged
  • Strong customer service orientation
