Compensation: 46,732 - $58,415

SUMMARY
The Toledo Museum of Art is seeking a dynamic Assistant Curator of Ancient Art to bring new focus to this significant area of the Museum’s collection. The Museum is strongly committed to a curatorial program that blends scholarship and connoisseurship with equity and inclusion in paradigm-shifting ways for the twenty-first century Museum. This position will support the Museum’s ambitious program of exhibitions and assist in developing gallery displays and presentations. The role is best suited to a candidate with a generalist’s breadth of knowledge of Ancient cultures that extend from the Mediterranean basin through the Near East.
TMA’s collection includes masterworks in Ancient Greek and Roman as well as Ancient Egyptian and Near Eastern art. The role is best suited to a candidate with strong research skills and an understanding of the Antiquities art market. The ideal candidate will have the ability and desire to thoughtfully integrate ideas about Ancient Artworks into the framework of the larger TMA collection and possess a genuine desire to engage a broad range of audiences. Highlights of this position will include the opportunity to make significant acquisitions and to organize substantial exhibitions with the guidance of the Director of Curatorial Affairs. The Assistant Curator of Ancient Art will also be expected to share the story of Ancient history in new and innovative ways as TMA gears up for a complete reinstallation of the collection in 2027.
The candidate should seek to include a diverse array of narratives and perspectives; engage antiquity with topics of interest in the 21st century; actively seek to engage the Museum with new national and international stakeholders; be energized by involvement with and cultivation of the community of Toledo; be innovative, reliable, communicate well with others and be deadline driven.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Works to support the Museum’s ambitious program of Ancient Art acquisitions, exhibitions and innovative gallery displays and presentations.
  • Conducts quality art historical research primarily focused on the permanent collection, acquisitions for the permanent collection and exhibitions.
  • Provides project management support for Ancient Art curatorial projects and assists in the creation, tracking and execution of interpretive plans related to Ancient Art curatorial initiatives, large and small.
  • Coordinates and oversees arrangements related to visiting scholars/artists/curators, including, but not limited to, Museum-hosted symposiums and curatorial-driven events.
  • Liaises with other Museum departments as needed to communicate updates and key information about curatorial projects in an as needed and timely manner.
  • Provides tours of the Ancient Art collection and speaks with visitors, donors and Museum support groups about curatorial initiatives and activities as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Master’s degree in Ancient Art history or related field.
  • 1-2 years’ experience working in a museum and a proven track record of realizing complex projects.
RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to the Senior Director of Collections & Curatorial Affairs initially (and then Director of Curatorial Affairs in near future) and works collaboratively across all departments.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Standard office environment requiring regular use of phone, computer, and copy machines. The person in this position frequently communicates with the public and staff who have inquiries and must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. This person may attend events inside and outside of TMA, including evenings and weekends with occasional overnight travel.
