The Revenue & Regulatory Law section of the Colorado Department of Law is seeking a dynamic and committed attorney to join their team in the Nursing & Professional Boards unit. In this role, you will help protect Coloradans through the state's regulation of nursing and other professions. What you will do:
The Nursing & Professional Boards unit is made up of one administrative assistant, one paralegal, and eight attorneys who represent the state's Board of Nursing; Plumbing and Electrical Boards; Accountancy Board; Board for Licensure of Architects, Professional Engineers, and Professional Land Surveyors; and other programs within the R&R section. This work promotes consumer protection through regulating, licensing, and taking disciplinary action against licensees and pursuing litigation against unlicensed persons who engage in a regulated profession without a license.

Our newest team member will have the opportunity to provide general counsel services and litigate on behalf of a variety of clients to help ensure the integrity of Colorado's regulatory framework.
The attorney's responsibilities may include any of the following matters:
  • Independently handle litigation, negotiation, hearings, and appeals of cases on behalf of the Board of Nursing, and other clients the unit represents;
  • Litigate matters that require immediate action including prosecuting license suspensions and defending actions to seal criminal records;
  • Enforce the Nurse and Nurse Aide Practice Act against unauthorized persons through actions for injunctive relief in District Court;
  • Advise the Nursing Board's Inquiry and Licensing Panels; and
  • Assist other attorneys with counseling and litigating cases on behalf of other clients the Nursing & Professional Boards unit and the section represent.

The attorneys on our team represent our clients' interests in a variety of settings, including professional licensure and disciplinary actions. The position involves an administrative law practice before the Office of Administrative Courts, as well as some practice in District Court and the Court of Appeals. Additionally, our work involves advising clients in all aspects of its regulatory functions and responsibilities, including Open Meetings and Open Records laws and assisting with the promulgation of rules.
This attorney's primary role will be to serve as litigation counsel to the Board of Nursing. This is a fantastic opportunity for an attorney who is 1) interested in healthcare litigation, 2) eager to work in a supportive multi- disciplinary team, and 3) motivated to do work that directly impacts the lives of Coloradans.
This recruitment may be used to fill multiple attorney positions in the Department of Law.
Salary note: Although a salary range is listed, salary will be set commensurate with the successful candidate's qualifications and in compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights:
What we are looking for:
Qualified applicants must be licensed to practice law in Colorado or be clearly eligible to waive into the Colorado Bar. Candidates eligible to waive into the Colorado Bar will be required to submit proof of their completed application before the first day of employment.
Candidates should have 1) a strong litigation background; 2) a demonstrated ability to handle negotiations, litigation, and trials independently and effectively; 3) experience or capacity to manage a caseload autonomously; 4) proficient client communication skills; and 5) excellent writing skills. A background in healthcare is also helpful, as is work with experts in the nursing or other medical fields. The ideal candidate will be skilled at maintaining strong client relationships; have a passion for litigation, trials, and learning new areas of law and the healing arts; and demonstrate a strong commitment to serving the public interest.
