The City of Stockton is seeking to fill a vacancy in our Municipal Utilities Department for the position of Assistant Civil Engineer. Under general supervision from a Senior or Associate Civil Engineer, incumbent will be responsible for a variety of CIVIL ENGINEERing work in connection with the design and construction of public works projects. Incumbents should have knowledge and experience related to the distribution and treatment of drinking water, the collection and treatment of sanitary sewer and collection of storm sewer. Knowledge of sewer pump stations and sewer and water treatment plant processes is a plus. If selected to fill a vacancy, incumbents will work a City of Stockton 9/80 schedule: 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Fridays, with alternating Fridays off.
Prior to appointment, eligible candidates will be required to submit to and successfully pass a background investigation, which will include fingerprinting and a medical examination which includes a back evaluation.
Under general supervision, performs a variety of professional CIVIL ENGINEERing or surveying field and office work of a routine to complex nature, including development review, design and/or inspection of public works projects, and design and modification of traffic control devices; may develop recommendations for coordinating traffic improvement projects; performs related duties as assigned. Associate Engineer/Associate Civil Engineer/Associate Traffic Engineer may direct the work of subordinate staff engaged in technical and professional engineering and/or surveying duties such as field and office engineering design of capital improvement projects; surveying work; preparation of complex engineering specifications and legal descriptions, contract compliance, design, installation, maintenance and analysis of traffic planning and traffic control programs, and/or related duties.
This is a deep class in which incumbents may be assigned to any level, provided that they possess the required education, license and experience, and successfully demonstrate proficiency which meets the qualifications for the class to which they are to be assigned. In addition, incumbents may be assigned to a comparable level in the Project Manager series, Public Works Inspector class, or Survey Supervisor class, provided that they possess the required education, license, and experience and successfully demonstrate proficiency which meets the qualifications for the class to which they are to be assigned. This class is distinguished from the Senior Civil Engineer in that the latter has overall responsibility for a section of the Engineering Division.

Assistant Civil Engineer: Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university with major course work in CIVIL ENGINEERing or a closely related field, and two (2) years of engineering experience in design, development review, construction, or traffic planning or operations. Must also possess a valid California registration as a Professional Civil Engineer.
OR
Possession of a valid California registration as a Professional Civil Engineer and six (6) years of engineering experience in design, development review, construction, or traffic planning or operations. Possession of an Associate of Arts degree or completion of sixty semester units or equivalent quarter hours from an accredited college or university with major course work in pre-engineering or a closely related curriculum may be substituted for two years of the experience.
Other Requirements:- Must possess a valid California driver's license.
- Specified positions may require a willingness to work out of doors in all weather conditions and physical strength to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 60 pounds.
The Examination:
Applicants who qualify in terms of relevant work experience and education, that best meet the needs of the City, will be invited to participate in the examination process, which may include a written and/or practical examination weighted 100%. However, the City reserves the right to utilize alternative testing methods if deemed necessary. Candidates must receive a minimum passing score of 70%, as determined by the relative performance of all candidates in all portions of the examination. In the event of identical ratings, candidates' names will be arranged in order of application date/time, and, if the same, then arranged alphabetically.
