We are seeking an Assistant City Engineer to oversee the planning, design, supervision and construction inspection of pavement, sewer and other municipal public works projects.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., plus additional hours as required. Ask us about our summer hours!
Hiring Range: $93,633-$99,158
No residency requirement.

  • Performs engineering design, estimating, specification writing, contract administration and construction supervision of pavement, sewer and miscellaneous public works projects.
  • Performs general management supervision for a group of engineers, construction inspection manager, engineering technicians, and engineering aides.
  • Supervises a group of engineers, engineering technicians and engineering aides in the preparation of plans and specifications for pavement, sewer and miscellaneous public works projects.
  • Supervises a group of engineers, construction inspection manager, engineering technicians and engineering aides in construction supervision and inspection of pavement, sewer and miscellaneous public works projects.
  • Selects and determines procedures in engineering practices.
  • Prepares and reviews payments and change orders for pavement, sewer and miscellaneous public works contracts.
  • Prepares technical reports, studies, permit applications and grant applications as required.
  • Assists in the preparation of the Department of Public Works annual and long-range capital improvement programs.
  • Meets with the public, developers, contractors and other departments or consultants with respect to questions pertaining to projects.
  • Reviews plans and specifications prepared by outside consultants for private developers and other City department projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  1. Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
  2. Minimum of six years of progressively responsible experience with municipal projects.
  3. Registration with the Wisconsin State Board of Architects, Professional Engineers, Designers and Land Surveyors as a Professional Engineer or ability to obtain within 12 months.
  4. Valid driver's license and good driving record.

A combination of equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.

  • Considerable knowledge of civil and structural engineering principles and practices as applied to the preparation of plans, specifications, estimates and reports for public works construction. Good knowledge of field engineering, including surveying, inspection and construction practices. Good knowledge in the sources of engineering information. Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and techniques of effective supervision.
  • Considerable skill in receiving assignments in general terms and to schedule, plan, layout and direct the work of a group of engineering subordinates; coordinating the work of a unit with a general program or specific problems; applying engineering theory to complex field and office problems; coordinating various engineering and operational activities.
  • Ability to proficiently utilize a computer and the required software. Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to work independently. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, other agencies, and the general public. Ability to work the required hours of the position.

May be required to demonstrate minimum competency by successfully passing approved tests.

Physical Requirements

Ability to perform the following activities:

  • Ability to focus for long periods of time on projects.
  • Ability to reach and climb.
  • Ability to walk on rough terrain.
  • Ability to work in varied environmental conditions.
