Job Description

Assistant Attorney General/Chief Counsel

Governmental Affairs Section - Kansas City

The Missouri Attorney General's Office is actively looking for qualified candidates with excellent credentials to serve as Chief Counsel in the Governmental Affairs Section.

Attorneys in the Governmental Affairs Section serve as counsel to the State of Missouri and more than 50 state agencies, boards, and commissions. Attorneys practice in both state and federal trial and appellate courts with significant practice in state administrative tribunals. The Section has staff in the Office's Jefferson City, St. Louis, and Kansas City locations.

The Governmental Affairs Section handles the Attorney General's widest variety of work, allowing attorneys to gain experience and learn new areas of expertise through both litigation and client counseling. The Section's most common legal areas include administrative law; professional licensure discipline; constitutional law; statutory and regulatory interpretation; environmental and natural resources law; Sunshine Law enforcement and education; election law, campaign finance, and ballot initiatives; government contracts; criminal records expungements; social services and mental health work, including guardianships and abuse and neglect issues; and animal welfare and cruelty issues against inhumane commercial animal breeders.

The Chief Counsel is responsible for convening regular meetings with client agencies to discuss ongoing litigation; assigning cases to team members; providing guidance and strategy advice to team members; implementing training and staff professional development; monitoring the performance of team members; conducting performance evaluations; and participating in recruitment and retention efforts. The Chief Counsel is expected to handle his or her own caseload and to work closely with other Section Chiefs in the Office to ensure effective handling of cases and identifying opportunities for collaboration to advance the Office's missions.

Previous government and administrative practice and experience managing legal staff is preferred. Candidates should have significant litigation experience across a broad practice area.

This position will involve intermittent travel within the State.

Health, vision, dental, and life insurance plans, state pension, and deferred compensation available.

Candidates must be licensed to practice law in Missouri. Candidates with relevant experience and education will be considered for an interview.

Salary range is commensurate with experience.
