Position: Tenure-track position (full-time, with a 10-Month contract), with complete benefit package
Salary: Up to $54,000 for Assistant Professor and up to $60,000 for Associate Professor, as per the CBA
    Union Affiliation: MFPE
    Start Date: August 1, 2024

    Description:

The University of Montana Western is seeking a teacher-scholar to teach both lower-division and upper-division courses in psychology at the undergraduate level (three courses each semester). There is some flexibility in the course load, but we require a candidate who will be able to teach courses that complement existing content coverage. We are particularly interested in candidates interested in teaching courses like psychological statistics, research methods, cognitive psychology, comparative psychology, physiological psychology, neuropsychology, forensic psychology, health psychology, or multicultural psychology. The position may also involve teaching the introductory course or advanced special topics seminars, and directing student theses or internships.

Montana Western is defined by our Experience One model, in which students and faculty engage with a single course at a time, with a maximum of 25 students enrolled in each course. Each course meets for an intensive eighteen-day block, with classes meeting for three hours each day (Monday through Friday). The block schedule allows students time to engage with the authentic practices of the discipline, and Montana Western faculty have the flexibility to create experiential learning environments aligned with that mission. Tenured and tenure-track faculty at Montana Western generally teach three blocks per semester (a 3-3 teaching load), leaving one block (essentially a month) each semester when faculty can focus on research or other forms of professional development, as well as service activities.

We are searching for candidates who can demonstrate professionalism and good citizenship, evidence of the ability to maintain scholarly productivity within the UMW institutional context, and a commitment to professional service including guiding undergraduate research, advising, assessment efforts, committee work, and other departmental or university duties as assigned.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in Psychology in hand by the start date.
    • Preparation to teach in complementary content areas.
    • Previous experience teaching in a face-to-face setting.

Additional Qualifications of Interest (Although These Are Not Required):

    • Demonstrated evidence of excellence in teaching.
    • A substantive background in statistics and research methods and experience teaching in these areas.
    • Substantial experience with research employing experimental methods.
    • Experience guiding undergraduate research.

Class sizes are small, and students take a single course at a time, three hours each day for 18 days, before moving on to the next course. Each course is four credits, and four blocks are offered each semester. The block schedule facilitates field and lab work, undergraduate research, study travel, and interdisciplinary teaching.
