The Dominican University of California (DUOC), Art Therapy Psychology’s (ATP) Director of Clinical Practicum Training provides clinical oversight and training while connecting community agencies to the MA LMFT/LPCC, MA AT and Advanced Standing MA graduate student trainees. This full-time, 9-month position brings a broad range of experience that requires a minimum of 12 units combined teaching and administrative work per semester. It is required that the position be qualified to teach a range of courses across the curriculum. In addition to a demonstration of understanding required state licensure mandates and compliance with the California licensing Board (BBS) requirements, the director maintains AATA approval program standards and guidelines in order to implement Art Therapy integration with LMFT/LPCC students in their practicum; includes planning, developing, and implementing special events for students, alumni, and practicum agencies such as the “Practicum Fair” which connects agencies with the DUOC ATP students.  The director coordinates the “Orals Capstone Presentations,” maintains and keeps the Seminar Manual current, remains abreast of timelines from state licensing and Art Therapy accreditation through the Practicum/Seminar course Moodle.

Under the direction of the Director of Clinical Practicum Training, Clinical Supervisors play an integral role in facilitating trainee growth and are a critical part of the DUOC ATP Practicum and Seminar team.

Responsibilities

  • Complete a minimum of 12 units academic and/or directorial work per semester which include the responsibility to fulfill the requirements of BBS and ACATE Accreditation
  • Coordinate site placements for students
  • Organize the Practicum Fair, Oral Qualifying Review Presentations, CAMFT presentations, and to oversee site visits of Practicum agencies.
  • Maintain their LMFT licensure requirements to meet the supervision requirement as well the ATR-BC requirements. Having the ATCS (Art Therapy Credentialed Supervisor) is important but not required.
  • Attend and participate actively in all required department meetings, student advising, program development projects, accreditation as requested by Department Chair.
  • Update and maintain current agency/DUOC contracts and MOUs forwarded to the Dean of LAE (Liberal Arts & Education) and V.P. of Academic Affairs.
  • Engage and “vet” new agency requests from the DUOC ATP students or from referrals/requests of the outside agencies seeking ATP trainees at their agencies:
    • provide initial introductory paperwork and contracts as discussion points for the agency placement and supervision of ATP graduate student trainees,
    • discuss requirements for 350 direct client contact hours and 700 total hours that exceed other state licensing requirements for trainees in their practicum,
    • meet in person, email, or phone to engage with new Directors and Clinical Supervisors to assure that all parameters of the collaboration expectations meet the agendas and requirements of the ATP program and the agency,
    • consult about Art Therapy integration with traditional clinical practices,
    • delineate the Orals Capstone qualifying exam expectations during the trainee’s second semester encouraging the agency Supervisor/s to attend, discussing the weekly theoretical treatment plans applying theoretical application which will be incorporated and highlighted in their Capstone Orals exam.
  • Maintain professional collegial relationships and ongoing consultations with existing practicum sites, updating the agency on required information/contracts and protocol to assure trainees can accrue their hours in the 9-12 month contractual timeline.
  • Consult, educate, provide oversight, and supports both agency and the trainee if challenges arise, facilitate any discussions and concerns in an attempt to rectify these issues and concerns in a professional manner. Conducts “Advancement to Candidacy” interviews with students prior to their taking the Practicum/Seminar series of courses.
  • Evaluate and develop program curriculum, policies, and procedures, ongoing, with Department Chair, Director of PhD, and Clinical Supervisors.
  • Regularly update the Practicum database of agencies available to Art Therapy MA Learning Community on the Moodle which provides a spreadsheet of information on the many possibilities of practicum sites. 
  • Each semester, update Seminar Manual, located on course Moodle, (post degree) BBS and ATR guidelines such as registration, describing the Provisional status and new legislation influencing the student trainee and associates status and requirements.
  • Work with the Clinical Supervisors as a team to model and provide best practices, professional group trainings and site visits to the agencies.
  • Coordinate Weekly 30 minute Clinical Supervisors meeting to disperse and gather timely relevant information to maintain department records.
  • Attend New Student Orientation for students to inform students to prepare for practicum.
  • Supervise and Manage 30 Hours Required Fieldwork required of each student.
  • Maintain presence and engage in quarterly Northern California LMFT Educator Consortium.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Art Therapy
  • ATR-BC
  • Clinical Licensure, plus two years of clinical experience
  • Teaching Experience
  • Google Suite: Docs, Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Sheets, and Slides
  • Microsoft Office Suite: Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Zoom
  • Digital Camera

Preferred Qualification

  • Doctorate in Art Therapy or related field
