The City of Birmingham's Museum of Arts is seeking a well-qualified Art Education Curator to be responsible for researching Art Education trends in an effort to develop educational presentations and materials to be used for programs, tours, and exhibits. This individual oversees the design and implementation of projects in the museum's educational spaces through collaboration with museum staff on all aspects of various projects. They are responsible for the oversight or direct management of research, design, timelines, budgeting, installation, and implementation. The Art Education Curator may also visit other museums to view and observe other educational spaces and trends in the area of Art Education. They are responsible for hosting various programs and tours, making presentations, conducting research, and evaluating the success of educational programming at the museum. Employees in this job class also assign and review work of subordinates, manage budgets for various projects and participate in various public relations functions in an effort to promote and endorse the museum.

Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred qualifications are experiences, education, and/or other job-related qualifications considered to be highly desirable by Merit System agencies. The preferred qualifications may be used by the hiring agency to identify applicants to participate in subsequent selection processes.
  • Experience providing art-related educational programs for children (elementary through high school).
  • Experience curating or developing exhibitions, permanent collection galleries, and/or educational galleries/spaces.
  • Experience creating programs designed for visitors with various sensory needs or visual impairments.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Art History or a related field such as Museum Education or Museum Studies with twelve (12) or more hours of coursework in Art History (Bachelor or Master level course work).
  • Experience researching and developing labels, text panels, tour content, audio guides, and interactive elements for exhibits or spaces.
  • Supervisory experience to include monitoring and directing work, collaborating with other departments, implementing strategic plans, and ensuring department goals align with institutional priorities.
  • Experience in presenting information to a variety of audiences and tailoring it to the appropriate level.

Typical Job Duties:
  • Participates in the development of strategic plans for the museum and the education department by working with staff to develop goals, create actions plans to achieve goals, monitor progress, and report progress towards goals.
  • Manages museum projects by establishing goals and timelines, delegating responsibilities, reviewing work, working with staff, volunteers, and outside vendors.
  • Researches and develops exhibition interpretation ideas by visiting other museums and viewing current exhibits, communicating with curators and museum staff from other museums to discuss trends, develops and presents exhibit interpretation proposals, and determining responsibilities of museum staff for various projects.
  • Directs and oversees design and implementation of education space within an exhibition by developing design plans, selecting art and educational items for the space, communicating with staff regarding the design plan, assisting in the installation, researching and developing all accompanying texts and signage, and conducting training for patrons and volunteers involved with the exhibit.
  • Prepares interpretive, interactive educational materials to be used for programs, tours, or exhibits by preparing presentations, developing interpretation for exhibits, programs or tour-specific materials, creating learning tools (e.g., activities, handouts, etc.), and providing materials to groups in advance of their program or tour.
  • Hosts various programs and tours by meeting and greeting groups upon their arrival to the museum, presenting the agenda and schedule of events to the group, informing the group of any rules that must be followed white at the museum, making presentations to the group, providing tours, participating in activities, and developing and collecting attendance and evaluation data to use in planning future programs or tours.
  • Conducts research to stay abreast of Art Education trends, develop materials for the education gallery, and to develop lectures and lecture materials on numerous topics.
  • Conducts various public relations/liaison functions to endorse and promote the museum including sharing information with various media outlets, creating promotional materials, communicating with various groups and organizations, and communicating and working with patrons as needed.
  • Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.
  • Prepares, monitors, and administers departmental or organizational budget by reviewing spending trends, expenditure reports, analyzing financial data and ensuring expenditures are within annual budgetary limits.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Salary range: $58,094 - $90,126 (starting salary is commensurate with education and experience)
  • Flexible work arrangements including remote/telework options for up to two days per week and alternative work schedules (e.g., four 10-hour days). Such flexible work arrangements must be approved by the Department Director.

Work Environment:
Work is conducted almost exclusively indoors in an office setting. Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc.
Physical Demands:
Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods of time, but may involve occasional walking or standing for brief periods. May involve occasional light lifting of items or objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
