SPACES Archives
Position: Archivist (Contract)
Founded in 1978 by photographer and cultural advocate Seymour Rosen, – Saving and Preserving Arts and Cultural Environments – is a physical and digital archive dedicated to the study, documentation, and preservation of art environments – personal spaces transformed into site-specific works of art. The Archives consist of many discrete collections, including artist files, images (in various formats), ephemera, books, A/V material, and more. SPACES is currently a preservation project of Kohler Foundation and is located in Kohler, Wis.
The SPACES Archivist will manage the growth, processing, and maintenance of the SPACES archival collections. The essential duties and responsibilities of the position are outlined below. Other duties may be assigned.
- Collaborates with SPACES curatorial consultant on the oversight of the unique materials housed in SPACES Archives, according to current archival standards
- Reviews and processes new collection material
- Assists with archival requests from staff and the general public; assists with publishing projects
- Manages digitization of SPACES archival materials; implements quality control procedures and workflows for digitizing collections
- Assists with production of new archival documentation initiatives
- Creates and documents archive management system for ongoing implementation
A successful candidate will have:
- Relevant experience in library, archive, or special collections
- Demonstrated job or school experience with preservation and conservation standards for archival collections
- Broad knowledge of archive/ museum standards and practices
- Experience with and knowledge of digitization standards and best practices
- Knowledge of file and data management techniques used in museum registration and record keeping
- Proficient use of PastPerfect, Adobe Creative Suite, Google Drive, and Microsoft Office
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Enthusiasm for art and creativity

- Prolonged sitting at a computer station
- Ability to climb step stools to retrieve and replace boxes weighing up to 35 pounds without assistance
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 35 pounds while using appropriate lifting techniques and following all safety rules

This position is a temporary contract, up to 16 hours per week/ not to exceed 780 hours total, beginning ASAP and ending December 2024. It is compensated at $25 per hour. This position is in person, with the possibility of some duties being performed remotely.
