Architectural Historian
The Architectural Historian will play a crucial role in documenting and nominating two federally-owned structures to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) for a cultural resources' documentation project.

Compensation

Duties/Responsibilities
- Conducts thorough archival research to gather historical information relevant to the structures.
- Analyzes architectural features and historical significance of the structures.
- Collaborates with the project team to synthesize background information and create a historic context for the nomination.
- Evaluates the architectural integrity of the lookout structures in accordance with the Secretary of Interior's Standards for professional qualifications.
- Prepares detailed architectural descriptions and assessments for inclusion in the NRHP nomination form.
- Participates in field visits to the lookout sites to document architectural details and assess condition.
- Provides expertise in identifying contributing and non-contributing elements for the multi-property nomination form.
- Ensures compliance with relevant professional standards and guidelines, including those set forth by the client.
- Collaborates with other key personnel, including the Project Manager, historian and the Principal Investigator, to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the nomination documentation.
- Communicates effectively with project stakeholders.

- Proficiency in relevant software applications for architectural documentation and analysis is preferred.
- Strong analytical skills to interpret historical data, assess architectural integrity, and identify contributing and non-contributing elements for the NRHP nomination form. Ability to critically evaluate the significance of architectural features within their historical contexts.
- Ability to manage time effectively and meet project deadlines is crucial in this role. The candidate should be able to prioritize tasks, work efficiently, and adapt to changing project requirements while ensuring that deliverables are completed on schedule.
- Thorough understanding of regulatory requirements and guidelines, including those set forth by the federal government and relevant agencies, is essential for ensuring compliance throughout the nomination process.
Education and Experience
- Required: Master's degree in architectural history, Architecture, Historic Preservation, or a closely related field.
- Required: Minimum of 2 years demonstrated expertise in architectural history, historic preservation, and/or architectural design.
- Required: Minimum of 1 year experience working on historic preservation projects, preferably in the Pacific Northwest or Upper Great Plains regions.
- Required: Familiarity with the Secretary of Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
- Required: Proven experience conducting archival research and synthesizing historical information.
- Preferred: Certified Historic Preservation Professional (CHPP), National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE) Certification, American Institute of Architects (AIA) Historic Resources Certificate, Professional Archaeologist (RPA) Certification, or LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) with a Specialty in Historic Preservation
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, etc.
- Ability to drive to work sites within Western Montana.
- Ability to walk for moderate distances on varying trail terrains and uneven surfaces in all weather conditions. The work is primarily performed in forest and range environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, covered with vegetation, etc. Temperatures vary from above 100 degrees F to below freezing. Risks include snake or insect bites, stings, falling and rolling materials.
- Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds at times.
Pre-employment Requirements
