Job Summary
NOTES: This is a seasonal position with no benefits. Spokane County Aquatic Facilities are typically open from mid-June through mid-August, with staff training beginning in late May. All positions require successful clearance of a WA State Patrol inquiry under the Child and Adult Abuse Information Act. This recruitment will be used to fill up to two (2) vacancies working 35 to 40 hours per week.
HOURLY WAGE: $17.88-$18.38 per hour Depending on Experience If a certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI), hourly wage increases $1.00 per hour. (details below)
Examples of Duties
(Duties may include, but are not limited to the following)
Maintains the high standards of Spokane County facilities including cleanliness, maintenance, accountability, and excellent service. Demonstrates guest service techniques and ability to manage in a fast-paced environment.
Assists the Lifeguard Manager in supervising and implementing summer aquatic activities, programs and promotions for a Spokane County aquatics facility.
Assists the Lifeguard Manager in hiring, training, and evaluating staff for a specific Spokane County aquatics facility. Monitors the timesheets of seasonal staff for accuracy of hours worked, breaks, lunch hours, etc. Implements and follows the schedule created by the Lifeguard Manager and approves timesheets at the end of each shift.
Regularly coordinates with the Lifeguard Manager to successfully operate a highly attended aquatics facility during open swimming sessions and special events.
Ensures effective cash handling procedures. Assists the hospitality team with understanding and operating all systems correctly.
Maintains accurate records and inventory.
Demonstrates strong skills of customer service at the facility including answering phone calls, is available to answer customer questions, and communicates with patrons on a regular basis.
When the Lifeguard Manager is not present, acts as the main supervisor of the facility, monitoring staffing levels, regulating the number of guards on stand, running regular chemical tests, and actively rotates as needed throughout the week.
Implements regular maintenance schedules created by the Lifeguard Manager to ensure the cleanliness, safety, and sustainable operation of the aquatic facility.
Communicates regularly with Recreation Staff regarding facility needs, operations, issues etc.
Responsible for assigning scheduled WSI staff to teach specific lessons, follows up with staff about any issues that arise during lessons.
Works with the Lifeguard Manager inspecting the sites and providing training as necessary to ensure that aquatic operations are conducted in accordance with established policies and procedures. Provides input to the Lifeguard Manager about any changes necessary to correct any issues.
Fills out accident/incident reports as required by Section 1.7 of the Accident Prevention Program.
Regularly communicates with the Lifeguard Manager about the status of the facility.
Ability to maintain composure and delegate duties in high stress situations.
May serve as, or coordinate closely with, the designated site-specific COVID-19 monitor to administer and enforce a comprehensive COVID-19 job site safety plan, consistent with the guidelines provided by the WA State Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The job site safety plan includes such elements as PPE utilization, on-site social distancing, hygiene, sanitation, symptom monitoring, incident reporting, location disinfection procedures, COVID-19 safety training, safety protocol, exposure response procedures, post-exposure incident mitigation and recovery plan. etc.
Minimum Requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Prior experience as a certified lifeguard of an aquatic facility

CERTIFICATIONS:
Required: American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification
Preferred: American Red CrossWater Safety Instructor (WSI) certification, Lifeguard Instructor Certification, Water Safety Instructor Trainer (WSIT), and Lifeguard Instructor Trainer (LIT).
LICENSES: Must possess valid driver's license.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL POSITIONS:
BACKGROUND CHECK: All positions require successful clearance of a criminal background check.
WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR Additional employment option
While any aquatic facility team member is welcome to become a Water Safety Instructor, certified lifeguards are highly encouraged to assume this role. Water Safety Instructors (WSI's) must be certified through the American Red Cross and are responsible for teaching Learn to Swim classes.
WSI staff typically have more work hours available to them each week than non-WSI staff, and WSI's earn an additional $1.00/hour for all shifts.
Employees who pursue Red Cross WSI certification may be eligible for educational reimbursement for the WSI course fee. For a complete WSI Job Description and Educational Reimbursement Policy info, contact Recreation Department staff.

Ability to:
• Operate an aquatic's facility
• Effectively, direct, motivate, assign and evaluate the work of employees to
achieve goals and objectives.
• Coordinate effectively with maintenance personnel to ensure that proper maintenance
of the aquatic facility is provided.
• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Maintain accurate records.
  • Operate computers, standard office machines, and related software applications
  • Lift and carry 10-65 lbs.; ability to move freely throughout the aquatic's facility

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, managers,
citizen groups, subordinates, other county departments and the public.
