Job description

Elgin Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a candidate who is passionate about accomplishing our mission and strives to enhance our programs and events throughout our community and the Fox Valley region. The ideal candidate is creative, motivated, enthusiastic, works well with others, and takes on duties with a positive attitude as they are assigned.
Under the direction of the Recreation Facilities Manager, this position is responsible for the development and administration of aquatic facilities, programs, classes, and staff within the department. The position will directly supervise:

  • Wing Park Family Aquatic Center operations which include but are not limited to recruiting, training, evaluating and scheduling staff, and discipline staff when necessary, overseeing concessions operations and inventory management, managing budgets, ordering equipment and supplies, implementing policies and procedures, cleaning, maintaining and inspecting equipment and communicating with the pool technician.
  • All aquatic programs within the department: group swim lessons, private swim lessons, water aerobics, hydrotherapy classes and developing new offerings which all include but are not limited to monitoring revenue and expenses, tracking enrollment, training and scheduling staff, communicating with customers, assisting with swim level moves, sending out program surveys, entering programs into registration software and submitting brochure content.
  • Elgin Cyclones Swim Team which includes but is not limited to hiring and training coaches, scheduling meets and practices, managing payment and collection of fees, recruiting officials, facilitating booster club meetings, coordinating special events and home swim meets, and scheduling evaluations and registration of new swimmers.
  • Assist with the year-round operations of Adventure Island at the Edward Schock Centre of Elgin which includes but is not limited to checking and logging daily chemical readings, filling in when short staffed, entering payroll, submitting invoices, conducting lifeguard classes, and creating marketing campaigns.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:
The Elgin Parks and Recreation Department strives to be the heart of the community by creating community through people, parks and programs. In doing so, the department operates the Elgin Sports Complex, The Edward Schock Centre of Elgin, Wing and Lords Park Family Aquatic Centers, The Pavilion at Lords Park, the Hawthorne Hill Nature Center, Wing Park Golf Course, Highlands of Elgin Golf Course, Bowes Creek Golf Course, 76 parks, 47 playgrounds, Festival Park Splash Pad and a variety of community recreation programs and activities.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team based environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to lift 30lbs.
  • Ability to enforce policies and rules of the City in a diplomatic matter.
  • Ability to maintain a positive image and relationships with the community, staff and third party partners.
  • Ability to multitask, meet deadlines and problem solve.
  • Possess strong communication, organizational and customer service skills.
  • CPR/AED certification is required.
  • Ellis and Associates Lifeguard Certification required within thirty (30) days.
  • Ellis and Associates Lifeguard Instructor Certification required within six (6) months.
  • Obtain Food Handler Certification required by 5/1/2024.
  • Ability to obtain Food Manager Certification within six (6) months.
  • Certified Pool Operator certification is required within six (6) months.
  • Must possess good written and oral communication skills.
  • Valid IL driver's license required.
  • Fluent in Spanish and English helpful.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Three years of Parks and Recreation aquatic programming and/or experience with competitive swim teams.
  • Prior experience with aquatic facility management (serving average of 400 customers per day preferred).
  • Experience with recruiting, training and supervising staff and volunteers.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Recreation, Business Administration or related field desired.
  • Knowledge of budget and fiscal accountability.
  • Knowledge of IDPH swimming facility guidelines.
Proficiency in MS Office and RecTrac software (or related software
  • Ability to work 40+ hours per week. The work schedule may vary and will include regular nights and weekends.
