Title:
APS-3: Heavy Equipment Mechanic

This role is a part of the APS-03 Program. The U.S. Army's pre-positioned stocks (APS) serve to provide materiel power projection around the globe. These strategically positioned resources augment the Army's strategic airlift and military sealift requirements during contingency operations. Our program ensures that the U.S. Army's stocks are properly maintained and ready to deploy at a moment's notice.
The Heavy Equipment Mechanic (HEM) will:
  • Analyze malfunctions and repairs.
  • Rebuild, and maintain power equipment such as cranes, power shovels, scrapers, paving machines, motor graders, trench-digging machines, conveyors, bulldozers, dredges, pumps, compressors, and pneumatic tools.
  • Operate and inspect machines or equipment to diagnose defects.
  • Dismantle, and reassemble equipment using hoists and hand tools.
  • Examine parts for damage or excessive wear using micrometers and gauges.
  • Replace defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions, and test overhauled equipment to ensure operating efficiency.
  • Weld broken parts and structural members.
  • At times direct workers engaged in cleaning parts.
  • Assist with the assembly and disassembly of equipment.
  • Repair, adjust, and maintain mining machinery, such as stripping and loading shovels, drilling, and cutting machines, and continuous mining machines.
  • Perform field-level automotive maintenance on all equipment assigned or work-loaded to the assigned shop - primarily material handling equipment including military and commercial forklifts, cranes, bulldozers, tractors, earth movers, and mine sweepers.
  • Perform field-level maintenance on U.S. military automotive equipment.
  • Perform technical Inspections, diagnostics, parts identification and requisition, and repair in accordance with technical specifications and specified repair times.
  • Perform A/C repair and service on a wide range of automotive and material-handling equipment.
  • Interpret and apply technical instructions, schematics, and diagrams.
  • Update maintenance records and documentation in accordance with government regulations and local policies.
  • Properly use, store, account for, and dispose of hazardous materials and waste used and generated in the performance of duties.
  • Comply with all federal, state, and local regulations and procedures for handling and disposal of refrigerant and related hazardous materials.
  • Handle the movement of material and assets with forklifts and dollies.
  • Comply with company and government-specified safety policies and procedures.
  • Comply with all established environmental regulations, methods, quality standards, and time schedules applicable to this position.
  • Upon notification from the government, deploy to support issuing or receipt of equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must have at least 8 years of directly related professional experience.
  • Must possess a valid State-issued Driver's License.
  • Must be able to provide your own personal tools that meet the required tool list, and be able to use government-furnished special tools and facilities.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain local base access.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Common Access Card (CAC) requirements.
  • Must have a certificate of training from a vocational school or other recognized source with a major study in automotive maintenance, or another related field.
    • In lieu of formal course work, a combination of college credits, on-the-job training, other formalized training, or ASE certifications may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Expertise in military equipment.
  • EPA certification in the Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling Program to be compliant with section 609 of the Clean Air Act.
  • Strong background in automotive maintenance.
  • Leadership and time management skills.
  • Written and oral communication skills.
  • Planning skills.
  • Computer literacy.

Benefits:
  • Our workforce is paid hourly based on a guaranteed 40-hour work week; the daily schedule is from 6:00 am - 4:30 pm Monday-Thursday (work hours are determined by the hiring manager).
  • For hourly employees, the premium overtime is paid at time and a half.
  • The APS-03 daily schedule is a 4-day work week with the potential for overtime during high-demand missions.
  • The APS-03 standard workweek schedule is from 6:30 am - 5:00 pm Monday-Thursday with possible overtime of up to 8 hours (as the mission demands).
  • The APS-03 workforce receives 11 Federal Holidays per year in addition to earned paid time off.
