Job description

Summary:

To gain working knowledge, training, and experience in the construction and maintenance of overhead and underground electrical distribution lines in a safe, reliable and timely manner which will provide Itasca-Mantrap members safe, reliable electric service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Performs assigned work as a crew member under minimum supervision and in compliance with established REA, NESC, and I-M specifications, codes, safety rules, and general operating procedures.
  • Performs work on crews as assigned in construction of new overhead 1, 2, or 3-phase lines, including framing, setting and anchoring poles; stringing wires; hanging overhead equipment; hot line work; loading/unloading materials; and completing the job according to the specifications and orders in a safe, reliable, and timely manner.
  • Performs work on crews as assigned in construction of new single or three-phase underground lines, including making up transformers and underground cable; burying wire or cable; setting up switching cabinets; hot line work; loading/unloading material; and completing the job according to the specifications and orders in a safe, reliable, and timely manner.
  • Maintains the overhead and underground electrical distribution systems as scheduled or required, with the goal to restore service as safely and promptly as possible.
  • Operates all line construction equipment such as bucket trucks, digger derrick trucks, truck cranes, vibra-plows, backhoes, and dozers in a safe, reliable manner at all times in compliance with I-M standards and procedures.
  • Participates in On-Call Rotation schedule responding to after-hours outages in a timely manner, and carefully evaluating the situation before acting to restore service. After all facts are known the response is planned and carried out in a safe, reliable manner.
  • Seeks opportunities to learn and keep current on overall operations, procedures, and technology which relate closely to the position.
  • Participates actively in established safety training and instruction programs, job tailgate meetings, and consistently understands and applies what is presented in terms of safety codes, rules, and procedures.
  • Utilize technology, such as an iPad, for the electronic mapping system, staking sheets, material pick lists, work orders, job orders, timesheets, and recordkeeping processes.
  • Recommends changes in procedures and practices to improve productivity and quality with no loss of safety, reliability, or service standards to I-M members.
  • Maintains a good working relationship with members and general public on a consistent basis. Positive image of the cooperative is enhanced by good public relations.
  • Performs other tasks and special projects as assigned.

  • Keeps the Lead Lineman and Operations Manager informed of important matters which must be handled promptly, particularly serious safety or equipment problems.
  • Shows initiative in gaining and maintaining the skills, abilities, and knowledge required to perform this position in at least a fully qualified and satisfactory manner.
  • Must successfully complete accredited Apprentice program in a timely manner before being qualified as a Journeyman Lineman.

Job Criteria:

Education & Experience:

  • Electrical Lineworker diploma from an approved (accredited) program required
  • Acceptable progress in Apprentice Lineman Training Program bookwork
  • Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required
  • Good driving record and valid health card required
  • First Aid and CPR certified required
  • Minimum of 2 years of electrical linework preferred

Working Conditions:

Interacts with all I-M personnel providing effective verbal and written communication. Safely works on or near energized electrical lines, following all established safety procedures designed to avoid electrical contact to self and the public. Climbs poles or stands in a hydraulic bucket, often working in awkward positions. Must be able to physically perform pole top rescue. Frequently lifts materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasionally lifts items that weigh up to 100 pounds. Excavates, works around noisy equipment, and visually inspects and maintains all types of equipment and tools. Occasionally works after hours, weekends, or holidays to install, maintain, or repair both overhead and underground lines. Works outdoors with great physical exertion, often in poor weather conditions. Works on uneven terrain in fields and along roads, often encountering vehicular traffic.
