APPRENTICE LINE WORKER:

JOB SUMMARY: Career opportunity to receive apprentice training in learning to perform installation, maintenance, and repair of underground and above ground power distribution; operate line trucks, line working apparatus, and heavy equipment; descend into tunnels or trenches; string lines; locate damaged lines and poles; troubleshoot power distribution equipment to determine problem; splice cables; repair transformers; conduct voltage and amperage checks; replace fixtures in cross arms; hang insulators; replace and repair fuses, grounds, etc.; construct cross arms, etc. to be used on power poles; provide general labor in assistance to power line work; prepare material and equipment for field work; assist in responding to emergency calls; make connections and disconnections for customers; inform public of pending outages due to repair; repair street lights; trim trees and other debris from lines and loops; and explain problems to public; required to perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from high school or equivalent; experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the required work; valid Utah Commercial driver's license (CDL); reside within a 30 minute response time; strong desire and total commitment to enter into an Apprentice Agreement and participate in an accredited four (4) year apprenticeship program registered with the Federal Bureau of Apprenticeship Training. Preference given to applicants already in an BLS-approved Apprentice Program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Considerable knowledge of all applicable National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements; some knowledge of current power line design and construction techniques; basic knowledge of electrical theory including load calculations, wire sizing, fusing, transformer connections, and current grounding practices; basic knowledge of line working principles and techniques; physically fit, able to stoop, bend, and lift 100 pounds; no fear of heights; must be available to attend apprentice classes two nights per week for four years in addition to work schedule. As part of the 3rd year of the apprenticeship, employees must be willing to work an on-call rotation.


JOURNEY LINE WORKER:

JOB SUMMARY:

  • Perform installation, maintenance, and repair of underground and above ground power distribution.
  • Operate line trucks, line working apparatus, and heavy equipment.
  • Descend into tunnels or trenches.
  • String lines.
  • Locate damaged lines and poles.
  • Troubleshoot power distribution equipment to determine problem.
  • Splice cables.
  • Repair transformers.
  • Conduct voltage and amperage checks.
  • Replace fixtures in cross arms.
  • Hang insulators.
  • Replace and repair fuses, grounds, etc.
  • Construct cross arms, etc. to be used on power poles.
  • Provide general labor in assistance to power line work.
  • Prepare material and equipment for field work.
  • Assist in responding to emergency calls.
  • Make connections and disconnections for customers.
  • Inform public of pending outages due to repair.
  • Repair street lights.

  • Under general supervision; will construct, maintain, and repair all transmission and distribution electrical systems, both underground and overhead.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be a graduate of a standard high school or equivalent.

  • Experience equivalent to one (1) year full-time journey level electric line work installing, maintaining, and repairing high voltage overhead/underground transmission, distribution, and service lines.
  • OR completion of a recognized Apprentice Lineman Training Program will substitute for the required experience.
  • Must possess a Journey Lineman Certificate through an accredited program such as IBEW or IPSA.
  • Currently have a valid Utah Commercial driver's license (CDL).
  • Reside within a 30 minute response time.
  • Previous experience working for a municipal electrical system is desirable.
  • Must be able to work the "on call" rotation schedule.
