GENERAL PURPOSE:

Performs animal care tasks and technical services relating to the operation, maintenance, and upkeep of the Animal Shelter. Provides for the health, welfare, care, and wellbeing of all animals at the shelter, and maintains a clean and disease-free facility for all impounded or owner surrendered animals.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the direct supervision of the Animal Control /Shelter Manager and under the general supervision of the Public Safety Sergeant.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

None – this is not a supervisory position.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides information to the public by responding to telephone calls and assisting walk-ins.
  • Acts as animal control clerk to redeem, impound and adopt out animals, and maintains records of such transactions using available research avenues and Animal Shelter Manger (ASM) software.
  • Feeds, waters, and provides continuous care for impounded animals.
  • Performs general hygiene for animal care and ensures welfare and proper care of animals within the facility.
  • Observes animals for rabies and other diseases in accordance with proper disease control requirements, and coordinates handling and quarantine of such animals.
  • Performs routine maintenance and groundskeeping duties at the Animal Shelter facility and surrounding area. Uses high pressure wash equipment, as needed, to hose out pens with approved cleaning agents.
  • Transports animals to veterinary appointments for services including routine care, and terminally ill or aggressive animal care or euthanasia.
  • Provides information to the public regarding animal control issues and other related information. Receives and processes complaints.
  • Enforces all applicable city and state laws and ordinances; cites pet owners and violators when appropriate. Court appearances may be required.
  • Performs related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:


Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • One (1) year of experience/training related to Essential Functions preferred.
  • Must have a valid Utah driver’s license.

Knowledge:

  • Animals – Knowledge of animal behavior, animal handling techniques, and basic animal care.
  • Animal Control/Shelter – Knowledge of animal control procedures, shelter operations and shelter sanitation.
  • Animal Euthanasia/Immunization – Knowledge of animal euthanasia and immunization requirements and methods.
  • Computers/Office Machines – Knowledge of proper use of computers and office machines.
  • English – Knowledge of the English language, including proper structure, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Skills:

  • Administration of Drugs – Administering immunizations, tranquilizers and other drugs by injection or otherwise to animals.
  • Reading Comprehension – Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
  • Active Listening – Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Time Management – Managing one’s own time efficiently.
  • Speaking – Talking to others to convey information effectively.

Abilities:

  • General – Talking, hearing, and seeing are essential to the performance of the job; common eye, hand, finger dexterity are also required.
  • Inductive Reasoning – The ability to combine pieces of information to form general conclusions, includes finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events.
  • Manual Dexterity – The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp or manipulate objects.

WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • Moderate to heavy physical activity; requires frequent walking, standing, stooping, bending, sitting, and/or reaching; lifting, pushing and/or pulling of moderate weights, occasionally over 50 pounds.
  • Elements of the job pose various degrees of hazards common to animal control and animal impoundment.
  • Required to work outdoors in desert climate.
  • Moderate exposure to stress as a result of human and animal behavior.
