Job description

General Statement of Duties

Performs responsible work in the care of animals and the maintenance of the County Animal Shelter.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

An employee in this class performs a variety of tasks at the County Animal Shelter to care for and prepare animals for their return to their owners, foster opportunities, adoption, or euthanasia. Work involves ensuring the Animal Shelter and grounds are maintained in a clean, sanitized, and safe condition; feeding, handling, and providing custodial care to animals in the shelter; and assisting the general public in claiming and adopting animals. Employees are also responsible for preparing and maintaining various records pertaining to animal identification, animal populations, and veterinarian interventions. Work also includes extensive public contact responding to request and inquiries for service. Work also requires the employee to maintain supplies and equipment and other necessary records. The employee is subject to hazards associated with animal care including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as atmospheric conditions, noise, vibration, vicious animals, and physical conditions. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Animal Shelter Supervisor and the Animal Management Director and is evaluated through observation and review of reports.

Duties and Responsibilities

· Maintains the Animal Shelter; cleans and disinfects cages; performs general upkeep of the grounds; and maintains an inventory of facility supplies.

· Receives the general public and other organizations; provides tours; encourages adoptions and completes the required paperwork.

· Participates in preparing animals for possible adoption; medicates animals; vaccinates animals for rabies, feline leukemia and distemper; and participates in medical preparations.

· Houses a variety of animals collected by the officers assigned to animal control;

· Feeds and waters animals; euthanizes animals; and disposes of dead animals.

· Cares for sick and injured shelter animals; documents injuries with records and pictures; treats animals for upper respiratory infections, skin problems and gastric issues.

· Maintains appropriate records; answers general inquiries concerning adoption of pets and lost and found animals.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

· Knowledge of the operations, functions, procedures, and legal processes of the Animal Shelter.

· Knowledge of the methods of safely caring for animals.

· Knowledge of breeds of animals to aid in identification of lost pets and know aggressiveness of various breeds.

· Ability to be trained in animal control procedures.

· Ability to deal constructively and tactfully with the public.

· Ability to maintain accurate reports.

· Ability to communicate effectively with the public, exercising tact, courtesy and firmness when dealing with animal owners and the general public.

· Ability to build and maintain cooperative and effective public relations with the community.

Physical Requirements

· Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and perform repetitive motions.

· Must be able to perform work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly.

· Must possess the visual acuity to perform animal care work.

Desirable Education and Experience

Completion of high school and some experience in caring for animals; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements

· Must be able to obtain Rabies Vaccinator Certification status.

· Must have a valid NC Driver’s License.
