Summary Under general supervision of a Veterinarian, the Animal Health Technician will have work that involves examining, diagnosing, treating and euthanizing of a variety of animals in the care of the Animal Shelter.
This position provides quality veterinary medical services and maintains accurate records and reports. This role has work reviewed through discussion of medical decision, effectiveness of the disease prevention program, appearance, sanitation of the shelter facility and complaints. Maybe required to work weekends, shifts and holidays.
Major Duties and Responsibilities ON-CALL SCHEDULE Performs daily inventory audit of all animals. This includes counting the number of animals in the shelter and checking their health and well-being. Supervises Kennel Attendants in care & feeding of animals/sanitation & maintenance of shelter facility.
This includes ensuring that the animals are properly fed and watered and that the shelter is clean and sanitary. Mixes food/liquid formulas/medications/ supplements according to instructions/ prescriptions/knowledge of animal species. This includes preparing food and medications for the animals and administering them to the animals.
Examines & observes animals detecting signs of illness/disease/injury & select candidates for euthanasia/perform euthanasia on daily basis. This includes checking the animals for signs of illness or injury, and euthanizing animals suffering or that cannot be rehabilitated. Contacts veterinarians securing treatment to sick/injured animals & animals seized under cruelty prosecutions.
This includes working with veterinarians to get sick or injured animals the care they need and animals that have been seized due to cruelty. Performs animal grooming duties such as: washing, brushing, clipping, trimming coats, cutting nails, cleaning ears, and may include specialized procedures such as: branding/ tattooing/hoof trimming. This includes grooming the animals to keep them clean and healthy and performing specialized procedures such as branding or tattooing.
Provides advice to citizens on the ability to adopt individual pets & on the recommended medical care of adopted pets. This includes providing citizens with information about the shelter animals and the best way to care for them. Responds to questions from citizens & provide information about animals such as: behavior/habitat/breeding habits/facility activities.
This includes answering citizens' questions about the shelter animals and their care. Treats animal illnesses or injuries including dressing or suturing wounds/applying splints/ other protective devices following experience or instructions of veterinarians. This includes treating animals for illnesses or injuries and applying bandages or splints to injured animals.
Performs laboratory tests on blood/urine/feces such as urinalyses or blood counts assisting in diagnosis & treatment of Animal Health problems. This includes performing laboratory tests on animal samples to help diagnose and treat health problems. Inoculates animals against various diseases such as rabies or distemper.
This includes vaccinating animals against diseases such as rabies and distemper. Collects & records animal information such as weight/size/physical condition/treatments received/medications given/food intake. This includes collecting and recording information about the animals in the shelter, such as their weight, size, health, and care.
Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Skill in professional veterinary medical techniques & practices Knowledge of principles & processes for providing customer/personal services including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, evaluation of customer satisfaction Knowledge of administrative & clerical procedures/systems such as word processing, managing files & records, other office procedures & terminology, including structure/content of English language, including meaning & spelling of words/rules of composition/grammar Knowledge of chemical composition/structure/properties of substances & chemical processes/transformations including uses of chemicals & interactions, danger signs, production techniques, disposal methods Ability to deal courteously & effectively with the public/peers/subordinates Ability to provide veterinary medical services to all sheltered animals Ability to examine/diagnose/treat illness/injury & perform first aid/emergency care Ability to prepare/maintain records & reports ADA and Other Requirements: Positions in this class typically require grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. Physical Requirements: Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining the physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, climbing, or walking for extended periods Light to moderate lifting and carrying; some crouching, stooping, squatting, crawling, reaching, pushing, and pulling when performing tasks Adequate vision, hearing, and speech required.
Sensory Requirements: Concentrated and attentive use of one or more senses (visual, audio, and other sensory modalities) for proofreading, data entry, tabulating data. Ability to operate in an environment with frequent interruptions from people and or noises, which in return could result in some level of stress, fatigue, or strain. Comprehensive written information in work-related documents.
Ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech. Working Conditions: Indoor/Outdoor environment; work in a variety of environmental and weather conditions in indoor and outdoor settings; regular exposure to fumes or airborne particles, animal transmitted diseases, exposure to fractious, frightened, dangerous animals; mental and emotional stress from euthanasia; contact with irate/emotional pet owners and victims; frequent exposure to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration; potential for contact with toxic or caustic chemicals; the noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Must be able to comply with all OSHA Standards.
Other Requirements: Successfully complete and pass a pre-employment hearing, vision, and psychological evaluation. Preferred Qualification North Carolina Licensed Veterinary Technician Minimum Qualifications High School Graduate or Equivalent and three years related work experience OR Associate's Degree with one year related work experience Conditions of Employment The City's Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte.
