Job description

Under general supervision of the Support Lieutenant, supervises, coordinates, and participates in the daily tasks and activities of the Animal Control division.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Patrols assigned parks and areas; responds to complaints and calls for service; investigates or oversees animal bite/attack incidents; impounds animals and issues citations as appropriate; removes dead animals from parks, streets, and private properties; maintains service call logs.
  • Trains and evaluates assigned employees; prepares work schedules; reviews and approves timesheets and requests for vacation, overtime, and sick time; tracks and monitors employee certifications and continuing education.
  • Oversees the care of all impounded animals; assesses impounded animal behavior and assists in animal training to prepare for adoption; coordinate adoption events; updates information related to adoptable animals and adoption events on website and social media pages.
  • Participates in community outreach; provides information to the public regarding Animal Control, native wildlife, and pet registration.
  • Cleans, disinfects, and maintains Animal Control trucks and equipment; orders and maintains supply inventory.
  • Attends and participates in various meetings as required; recommends and implements policies and procedures.
  • May be asked to perform additional job duties that are directly, indirectly or completely unrelated to normal job functions in the course of presenting certain Town special events.
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned.
Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines
High school diploma or GED equivalent; AND three (3) years of Animal Control experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relations with fellow employees, Town officials, and outside contracts. Safe driving record. Clear criminal background check and clear pre-employment drug screen.
Knowledge of:
  • Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Supervisory principles and practices.
  • Basic animal care and control practices, procedures, and methods.
  • Social media platforms and other public outreach opportunities.
  • Work safety policies, procedures, and protocols.

Skill in:

  • Reading, interpreting, and implementing Animal Control laws, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Interacting with the public tactfully and professionally.
  • Prioritizing work and multitasking to meet deadlines.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
A valid Texas Driver's License is required. Must possess an Advanced Animal Control certification and a Euthanasia certification, or obtain certification within three (3) months of appointment.
ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS
On call two weeks on - two weeks off. May be required to work overtime as needed and with limited notice. Carries Town of Addison cell phone; will respond to all Animal Control calls while on call.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a standard office environment and in the field. While in the field may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and temperatures, dangerous animals, and infectious diseases. May be required to lift up to 100 pounds.
