Job description

Animal Caretaker / Adoption Counselor:

Are you looking for a position where you can work to save animals’ lives? Does the idea of match-making animals to new homes sound fun and rewarding? If so, the Animal Caretaker / Adoption Counselor position at Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP) might be the perfect entry-level role for you!

As an Animal Caretaker you will work with animals while also learning basic animal care and handling techniques. Once you have mastered the Animal Caretaker skills, your next step is to learn the process of being an Adoption Counselor, in which you will be connecting pets with families. You will also be trained in the intake area, where we accept animals being turned into our shelter. CAP is a nonprofit animal shelter going 50 years strong in Houston, and so you will be completing purpose-driven work, which is very fulfilling!

This position isn’t for everyone. It can be hard work, loud, smelly, and at times stressful. But if making a difference in the lives of shelter animals is something you are passionate about, AND if you like learning and moving up within an organization, it just might the most fulfilling job you’ve ever had.

Schedule and Activities:

A typical schedule for you at CAP would be 4 days at 10 hours per day, with at least one weekend day (our busiest times), from 9:00am to close (typically 7:00pm). This allows for you to have three days off every week! We also have part-time and split shifts to accommodate your school, caretaking, or other special schedules.

A typical day as a Animal Caretaker for you looks like: walking dogs, cleaning the cages and kennels, preparing and serving food, cleaning dishes and litter boxes, doing laundry, assist with meet and greets with potential adopters, sweeping, mopping and other animal care duties.

If you are ready to work hard, provide exceptional customer service, and handle a variety of animals from cats and dogs, to rabbits, hamsters and other small mammals, this will be a great position for you! At CAP we work as a team and with great compassion for all animals and we expect the same from our new hires. The position also has opportunities for advancement. After training as an adoption counselor you will be eligible to learn more about our intake of animals and medical care. You are eligible for a pay increase for each area that you master! In fact, our entire management team started as Animal Caretakers, so we value and encourage job advancement for you at CAP.

Pay and Benefits:

Your starting pay is $12.25/hr during an introductory period of approximately 90 days. After Animal Caretaker training is completed successfully you will be given a raise to $12.75/hr. Upon mastery of adoption counseling training, you will received another raise to $13.50/hr.

Full time benefits include:

-Medical, mostly subsidized by CAP

-Fully subsidized life insurance

-Supplemental insurance: dental, vision, accident, major medical, etc

-Paid Time Off: Sick, Self-care, Vacation, Birthday, CAPiversary, Holidays, Jury Duty, and Bereavement (including for your own pets)

-On-the-job hands-on training, webinars/seminars, and semi-annual team training

-Discounts for your own pets at the Pet Supply Store and Wellness Clinic. Discounts for adoptions.

To Apply:

Send completed employment application & resume to Jessica Ellis via email or mail to 17555 Katy Freeway, Houston 77094 or drop off at shelter.
