Job description

Serving Indianapolis and the surrounding counties since 1905, the Humane Society of Indianapolis provides vital services to animals and people alike through sheltering and adopting animals, providing positive reinforcement behavior training for adoptable animals through our behavior programs, and outreach through our community and shelter programs.

Position Overview

IndyHumane is seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual to join our team as the Animal Care Manager. This position is crucial for ensuring the highest standards of care and welfare for the animals within our facility. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing the Animal Care staff, overseeing the daily operations of Animal Care, and ensuring that all animals receive the best possible care, nutrition, and enrichment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership and Management: Lead, manage, and develop a team of Animal Care technicians to ensure a high standard of Animal Care, cleanliness, and welfare. Conduct regular team meetings, manage schedules, and provide ongoing training and support.
  • Animal Welfare: Oversee the health, welfare, and enrichment of all animals in the shelter. Work closely with the veterinary team to ensure timely medical care and follow-up. Implement and maintain animal welfare practices and protocols.
  • Operations Management: Ensure the efficient operation of the Animal Care department, including the maintenance of animal housing and the proper use of equipment and supplies. Develop and implement policies and procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Adoption Support: Work with the adoption team to ensure animals are ready for adoption, including providing information on the care needs of specific animals and facilitating meet-and-greets with potential adopters.
  • Record Keeping: Ensure accurate and up-to-date records are kept for all animals in care, including medical observations, behavior observations, and enrichment activities.
  • Animal flow and record auditing: assist with animal flow by auditing records to insure each animals movement through each step of the shelter process from intake to adoption.
  • Safety and Compliance: Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations regarding Animal Care, shelter operations, and workplace safety.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Technology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in Animal Care or shelter environment, with at least 1 year in a supervisory or management role.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to manage and motivate a team.
  • In-depth knowledge of animal behavior, care, and welfare best practices.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays as required.
