Job description

SNA International is seeking an Analytical Toxicologist I to work as a federal contractor within the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System. The position is assigned to the Division of Forensic Toxicology and will serve as a bench level analyst and Specimen Processing Technician for the Division of Forensic Toxicology Department of Defense Quality Assurance (DoD QA). The position will prepare and ship Open and Blind QC proficiency specimens, provide immunoassay and volatiles data, corrective action measures, standard operating procedure (SOP) improvements and revisions, review paperwork for compliance, accuracy and completeness, and perform any special testing as directed by laboratory management. Qualified candidates should be able to work as an integral part of the overall laboratory to assure that the laboratory meets the highest level of forensic analytical performance.
Critical Work Responsibilities:
  • Prepare Open and Blind QC proficiency specimens for the DoD military drug testing laboratories.
    • Prepare batches of urine for spiking
    • Aliquot urine into specimen bottles
    • Prepare bottle labels and chain of custody documentation
    • Package boxes for shipment
    • Ship packages to laboratories
  • Analysis of biological specimens using the following techniques:
    • Gas Chromatography-Headspace Volatiles analyses
    • Refractometer for Specific Gravity analyses
    • pH Measurements
    • Basic Knowledge of Immunoassay methodology
    • Basic Knowledge of Instrumental Analysis and Maintenance
  • Maintain an accurate written record of all analyses performed and ensure proper archiving of records.
  • Perform urine pour calculations for open and blind QC drug spiking.
  • Maintain the volunteer urine donor supply.
  • Participate in laboratory analysis programs including:
    • Routine instrument maintenance
    • Analysis of quality control specimens
    • Preparation for laboratory inspections by certifying and accrediting agencies
    • Responsible for maintaining laboratory facilities and equipment in operating condition and reporting discrepancies and problems to supervisory staff
    • Evaluates laboratory standard operating procedures (SOP) ensuring laboratory compliance with those standards; this involves reporting SOP discrepancies to supervisory staff Job Description: Analytical Toxicologist 1 (AT-1) DoD QA Specimen Processing Technician/Bench Analyst 2
  • Calibrate instruments, prepare reagents and samples for testing, complete testing and prepare written reports for supervisory staff.
  • Evaluate and maintain instruments, follow analysis protocols, and perform data review.
  • Maintain logs of analyses performed, equipment problems and solutions, temperature logs, and equipment operation logs.
  • Maintain the laboratory in a mission readiness status at all times; this requires analyst to be aware of existing and potential problems concerning laboratory safety, equipment operation, maintaining supply readiness, and other critical laboratory functions.
  • Handle hazardous materials and waste, ensuring proper safety precautions are taken in storing and disposition of these materials.
  • Complete research projects as assigned to include authorship in peer reviewed journal and/or presentation of scientific data.
  • Perform other job-related duties appropriate to the Division mission as assigned. EDUCATION OR
Minimum Requirements:
  • B.S. in Science-related field (e.g., Chemistry, Biology, Forensics, etc.)
  • A.S. in Science-related field and 3 years of job experience in a Forensic Toxicology laboratory preferred.
Must be a US citizen able to complete a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NAC-I) background investigation.
