Job description

This is a professional AIRPORT OPERATIONS position which exercises a high level of discretion and judgment regarding a wide variety of duties both independently and supervised for all AIRPORT OPERATIONS. The position exercises considerable confidential and independent decision making in response to difficult situations involving airside, landside, and terminal operations. The primary mission of the position is compliance with Title 14, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Part 139- Certification of Airports, and the Airport Certification Manual.
Relocation expenses will not be provided.
THIS IS A LIMITED INTERN POSITION
WORKING UP TO 29 HOURS PER WEEK, FOR UP TO ONE YEAR OF EMPLOYMENT.

Bargaining Unit: No Union Representation
  • Assisting with daytime and nighttime safety and security inspections and documents discrepancies.
  • Assisting with security patrols, issuing security challenges, and conducting vehicle security inspections.
  • Responds to aircraft and other airport emergencies.
  • Operates a vehicle on the non-movement area.
  • Communicates with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) - Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT).
  • Assisting with the development and implementation of Airport Standard OperatingProcedures, administrative regulations, policies, and training programs.
  • Plans, initiates and coordinates runway and taxiway closures during emergencies, routine maintenance and construction projects.
  • Under direct supervision, prepares and disseminates information concerning critical airfield conditions and hazards to the national airspace system via Notice-to-Air-Missions (NOTAM), and to airlines, tenants, operators, the ATCT and other airport divisions.
  • Monitors airport maintenance and construction activity to insure safe operations and compliance with safety plans
  • Prepares and distributes written and electronic reports as required.
  • Attends pre-construction and construction safety meetings.
  • Assists with updating and maintaining AIRPORT OPERATIONS databases, records and files.
  • Communicates with tenants, operators, airlines, the ATCT and other airport divisions regarding routine matters and special projects.

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations, airport policies and standard operating procedures
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions Ability to learn and apply technical policies, standards, and regulations.
  • Ability to hear and speak over the telephone, company radio and VHF radio Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing.
  • Ability to record information accurately, both in writing and electronically Ability to use a computer to access, interpret and record information.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction safety plans.
  • Ability to learn, comprehend, and apply 14CFR Part 139, applicable FAA advisory circulars, and airport standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to remain calm and effective under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to walk on improved or unimproved surfaces up to one mile several times daily.
  • Ability to climb up and down stairs, ladders, and other inclined surfaces.
  • Ability to occasionally bend and kneel.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 10 lbs. frequently, and 25 lbs. occasionally.
  • Far vision sufficient to determine condition of internal and external facilities and equipment during normal, emergency, and adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to distinguish colors and brightness accurately under day or night conditions.
  • Ability to work under sound conditions of up to 100 decibels with appropriate ear protection.
  • Ability to tolerate working conditions that may include jet engine fumes, odors, and exhaust.
  • Ability to work outdoors during inclement weather.
  • Ability and willingness to work any assigned shift.
  • Ability to pass a federal security background investigation to acquire and maintain DHS/Transportation Security Administration (TSA) mandated airport security identification and access control media.
  • Ability to pass Airport Security Access training as required by TSA regulations.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, representatives of other organizations and the public.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license within 60 days of employment.
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health and/or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
Must pass a ten-year background investigation, including employment, driver's license, security threat assessment and criminal history. Offers of employment are also contingent upon passing a physical examination, which includes drug screening. Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship. Employment Type: Limited Part-time
