Job description

Position Information
The Hettinger Research Extension Center (HREC) is seeking an Agronomy Research Technician to provide support for the agronomy program in conducting research on crop varieties, specialty crops and agronomy practices for crop production systems in southwest North Dakota. Research will be conducted primarily on small grains, pulse crops and oilseeds. Responsibilities will include all activities required for the successful execution of a field-based Agronomy Research program. These responsibilities will include packaging of seed, field site preparation, planting, herbicide application, note taking, harvesting, cleaning seed and other duties required to meet project goals. Research activities will require operation of farm and small plot research machinery including tractors, planters, combines, sprayers, etc. Maintenance and repair of farm and small plot research equipment including plot drill, combine and sprayers. Duties will include the use of computers and hand-held data collectors in the collection, entry, and analysis of data. Many duties will require working in outdoor environment with varying environmental conditions and will occasionally require lifting of bags or containers of seed, fertilizer, chemicals, etc. Assistance in the supervision undergraduate, temporary and seasonal staff will be necessary. Duties will require occasional travel to off station research locations and to attend meetings. The Research Technician must be able to carry out these and other duties as assigned with general and minimal guidance from the research agronomist and the HREC Director.
The Hettinger Research Extension Center (HREC) is one of seven out-state NDSU research extension centers. The HREC is located in Hettinger, ND. Hettinger is a city of approximately 1,200 in southwest ND. The HREC conducts research in the field of animal science (cattle and sheep), wildlife and range science, agronomy, and weed science. Hettinger is home to West River Health Services - a leader in rural health care in the US, community facilities, and internationally recognized hunting and recreational opportunities. Work Schedule:
Full-time. Monday-Friday with some weekends required. Busy planting and harvest seasons may require extended hours.
Advertised Salary:
Commensurate with Education and Experience.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A.S. degree in crop science, agronomy, plants science, weed science, or related field.
  • Experience with field crop production.
  • Ability to operate field and laboratory equipment.
  • Demonstrated computer skills and ability to work with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Hold or be able to obtain a North Dakota Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License within 6 months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • B.S. degree in crop science, agronomy, plant science, weed science, or related field or 3-5 years hands-on and practical experience in crops and crop production.
  • Experience with small plot field research, experimental design, data collection, and operation of farm equipment such as tractors, planters, combines and sprayers.
  • Experience applying agricultural pesticides and related crop input applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain and repair equipment.
