Job Title: After School Youth Counselor
Reports to: Youth Director
Department: Youth Program
FSLA: (Non Exempt 18 hours/week)
Summary:
Under the supervision of the youth coordinator, a successful incumbent may work with the staff to assist in the day-to-day operations of the after-school program and ensure all compliances are met.
AFTER-SCHOOL YOUTH COUNSELOR:
- Assist in the day-to-day operations of the program (opening and closing tasks).
- Creating an inviting and positive learning environment.
- Supervision of children in all activities to maintain the ratio of 1:10 at all times.
- Assuring a safe and secure environment in the classroom and throughout the center
- Setting up and maintaining the classroom’s physical environment to foster learning, comfort, health, and safety of children, parents, and colleagues.
- Assists in establishing and maintaining positive and effective relationships with each child’s family to foster children’s development.
- To encourage the development of each student in your group and to stimulate the campers' social development as group members.
- Create and develop activities as part of the yearly curriculum to engage the children.
- Sensitive to the diversity of children, their families, and co-workers, including but not limited to family composition, language, and culture.
- Be proactive and interact with the students during all their activities, trips, etc.
- Assist the supervisor in organizing and putting together activities and programs throughout the academic year.
- Engage and maintain a good relationship with parents, families, program consultants, and community partners.
- Maintains confidentiality of children and parents.
- Adherence to the policies and procedures of the organization and the center.
- Be a role model and leader for the students, classroom, and the center.
- Be proactive in identifying problems and providing solutions.
- Conduct daily and weekly licensing walk-throughs to adhere to state rules and policies ensuring the safety of all students.
- Ensure all paperwork is completed, such as attendance, field trip permission slips, transition rosters, injury reports, monthly attendance rosters, incident reports, and more.
- Assist in handling additional tasks as assigned/needed.
- Be responsible for the pick up of a small group of students from a neighboring school as assigned/ needed.
- Assist in our daily operations such as tasks in the kitchen as assigned/needed.
Qualifications - candidate must be/have :
- 18 years old.
- At least a High School Diploma or GED.
- Experience in working with Middle and Elementary students (highly preferred).
- Classroom management experience (preferred).
- Curriculum Development experience (preferred).
- Ability to observe/assess children’s behavior, reinforce safety regulations & emergency procedures, & apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
- Strong interpersonal skills, communication, organizational and guidance skills.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse children, families, and co-workers.
- Quick-thinking, flexibility, and effective leadership capabilities.
- Strong, positive, and nurturing approach to the care and education of children.
- Outgoing and energetic personality.
- Ability to work independently and exercise initiative.
- Ability to work with elementary and Middle school students and diverse groups.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $16.00 per hour
Expected hours: 18 per week
