Glendale Community College seeks individuals who are equity-minded leaders, committed to student success and closing equity gaps, to apply for its Full-Time, Tenure-Track African American and Ethnic Studies Instructor position. This is a full-time, tenure track, 10 month-per-year classroom teaching assignment, in the Ethnic Studies department of the Social Sciences division. The current teaching load is 15 instructional hours per week. Members of the full-time faculty will hold five office hours per week and are expected to devote as much time as necessary to perform the professional responsibilities of the position. Participation in professional activities, curriculum development, and campus committees is required. The teaching assignment may include courses offered in either onsite, online and hybrid format, evening and/or Saturday classes.

Examples of Duties

Teach African American and Ethnic Studies survey courses as assigned;

Advocate for and support a diverse student population in the areas of curricula, learning activities, teaching, mentoring, counseling, and other related student services.

Demonstrate a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, racial, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, learning-styles, and Ethnic backgrounds of community college students that supports an equity-focused educational environment.

Provide an environment conducive to effective learning.

Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Performs other instructional-related duties as assigned.
Maintain records of attendance, census, grades, etc.
Maintain regular posted office hours and be accessible to students.
Assist in the development and implementation of curriculum, policies, and procedures for all programs in the department.
Participate in staff development and continuing education activities that are designed to maintain and develop currency in the field, pedagogy (for traditional and online teaching and learning), and student support strategies, especially as they relate to student equity initiatives.

Participate in campus governance and professional activities (e.g., committees, scheduling, leadership positions, faculty meetings, mentorship, and culturally relevant professional development, etc.).


Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees and others encountered in the course of work.
Work to achieve the college's Institutional, Program, and Student Learning Outcomes in support of Glendale Community College's Mission Statement.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's in African American Studies, Black Studies, Africana Studies, Latino Studies, La Raza Studies, Chicana/o Studies, Asian American Studies, Native American Studies, or American Indian Studies
OR
Master's in Ethnic Studies
OR
the equivalent

Desirable Qualifications:

Active engagement with the practices and movements of African American and/or Black communities;


Teaching experience that reflects innovative pedagogy, including active learning and culturally responsive teaching practices which result in reducing or eliminating equity gaps;

Previous experience at the post-secondary level in African American or Black Studies;
Undergraduate and graduate coursework specifically in the area of African American Studies/Africana Studies/Black/Diaspora Studies; and

Experience leveraging educational and other technologies to support student learning.

Additional Information

Salary, Health and Welfare Benefits
Starting salary is from $65,951 to $91,306 per year depending upon education and experience. Step placement within the appropriate column is determined by Article VIII of the Glendale College Guild, Local 2276, Collective Bargaining Agreement. Additionally, information regarding health and welfare benefits may be found in Article XI.

Travel Reimbursement

Contingent on funding and eligibility, successful candidates selected for a face-to-face interview may be eligible to request partial reimbursement of travel expenses. Please contact the office of Human Resources for more information.
