Purpose/Summary
Community College of Denver is seeking individuals with demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive learning and work environment. CCD values the ability to work effectively with students, families, faculty, instructors and staff of diverse backgrounds.
GENERAL SUMMARY
This is a GRANT FUNDED Position (through June 2025) and is a full-time employee.
The purpose of the High School Equivalency (HSE) Instructor position will be to instruct AELA (Adult Education and Literacy Act) grant-funded HSE students in CCD's non-credit program. This instruction is for adult students (18+) who are interested in obtaining their HSE credential. This instructor's schedule will be Tuesday through Saturday and will be predominantly in-person. However, weather and other events may require occasional classes to be taught online. In-person instruction will occur at different sites in the Denver area. Driving required.
Applications will be accepted until finalists are identified, but preference will be given to complete applications received by February 23, 2024. Those who do not apply by this date may or may not be considered.
Duties and Responsibilities
The position will incorporate three types of services.
Instruction
  • Instruct between 3-4 AELA HSE classes each quarter
  • Track attendance and instructional activities and input by or before required deadlines
  • Create syllabi and share with students and director
  • Evaluate, track and report on student progress and support learning using established and current best practices in HSE instruction
  • Actively work with each student to prepare them for HSE testing.
  • Assist grant coordinator and AELA coach in documenting all AELA outcomes achieved by students.
  • Provide all learners with a safe and inclusive learning environment; offer classroom accommodations as needed and/or refer to the Accessible Design Coordinator
  • Proactively maintain supportive lines of communication with all students to help them succeed. Reach out to any student who has missed 2 consecutive classes.
  • Ensure all lesson plans are aligned with College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS).
  • Coordinate substitute coverage when necessary, informing the direct and grant coordinator with as much advance notice as possible.
  • Submit timesheets and all other administrative requirements on or before deadlines.
  • Input data into state database as needed.

Outreach, Recruitment, Registration , Intake, Assessment
  • Responsible for intake and registration for incoming students and ensuring proper documentation is obtained and entered into state system
  • Represent CCD, the Center for Workforce Initiatives, and the Adult Education program professionally at all times working with students, stakeholders and partners.
  • Help students register for GED/HiSET tests at a testing center, or help take practice tests online
  • Assist with AELA reporting and outcome tracking as needed
  • Understand all grant program goals and outcomes along with documentation required for evidence.
  • Maintain GED and HiSET Voucher Code spreadsheet for practice tests

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any equivalent combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree in adult education or a relevant field and/or a teacher certificate in High School or adult education

Experience:
  • Two - four years' experience teaching GED/HiSET to adults.
  • Ability to teach all subject matters in GED and/or HiSET.
  • Experience with databases, data tracking and data entry
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing

This position involves teaching at various locations, requiring the individual to have access to a car and maintain car insurance.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Microsoft Office Suite; Google docs/classroom
  • Strong communicator
  • Team player
  • Understanding of adult education in the community environment
  • Ability to problem-solve with adult students who are facing personal challenges, barriers to learning, and/or technology issues
  • Proficient in effective lesson planning to meet student needs; able to develop engaging activities with a wide range of materials to support multiple learning styles.

Preferred Qualifications:
Education:
  • Master's degree in education or Related Field

Experience:
  • 2 years working with diverse, economically disadvantaged population
  • Familiarity with the Adult Education and Literacy Act (AELA) grant and LACES database
  • Knowledge of various High School Equivalency tests (GED, HiSET)
  • Experience working in the community college setting
  • Experience using Aztec or Essential Education platforms.

Equipment Used: Desktop and/or laptop computer, A/V equipment, standard office equipment.Online platforms including WebEx, Zoom, Essential Education.
Other Considerations: Prescribe and practice ethical behavior. Set goals and objectives based on the needs capabilities of the population served.
