Summary

Chemonics' Climate Group uses a data-driven approach to better understand climate and related environmental risks and opportunities within its project portfolio and operations, establishing systems to identify and manage these risks, adjust processes, and continually improve its service. The Climate Group provides technical advisory services for new business and project management teams and provides technical support on Climate Risk management and climate finance to Chemonics' global portfolio of programs. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Chemonics' Senior Climate Risk Advisor in research, modeling, technical analysis, and stakeholder and partner interactions.
  • Through statistical analysis and interpretation of climate and weather model outputs, characterize the physical impacts of extreme weather conditions (e.g., extreme heat, rainfall, wildfires, cyclones, riverine and coastal storm surge) to human and natural systems.
  • Compile documentation to provide written analyses and summaries of relevant technical topics, including localized impacts to livelihoods, water and agricultural systems, forestry, and marine conservation and fisheries.
  • Contribute to the preparation of client deliverables:
    • Carry out research and analysis on physical Climate Risk and resilience issues.
    • Run climate models and synthesize outputs using interpretive languages.
    • Coordinate with the Chemonics project teams and partners to translate results into appropriate delivery formats and effectively to communicate findings.
    • Support data intake, cleaning, and preparation
  • Raises Chemonics' profile externally as a thought leader. Contributes to industry forums, such as technical working groups, conferences, learning events, and blogs.
  • Leads development of technical abstracts, articles, primers, tools, and summaries of Chemonics' approach in technical sector.
  • Participates in activities to build a mainstream climate knowledge by sharing best practices and important innovations through networks and knowledge management systems.
  • Creates new standards for services that increase overall performance for contracts and continues to raise the bar on improvements that create value.
  • Supports new business efforts through research, writing, and strategy development.
  • Ensures that all work products are provided on time and are of high quality.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required; Master's degree in a relevant field relating to climate change, etc. strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience in Climate Risk and vulnerability analysis required.
  • 3+ years' experience in climate data analysis and research.
  • Robust understanding of climate change science and knowledge of Bayesian statistical methods.
  • Strong knowledge of programming languages and statistical packages: Python, Matlab, or R.
  • Strong knowledge of GIS and software: Q/ ArcGIS.
  • Proven ability to create compelling visualizations from big data fluency with MS Office applications.
  • Knowledge of USAID, other Federal agency regulations and policies preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability effectively to communicate complex, technical issues to non-expert audiences.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Self-starter, autonomous and responsible - must be able to meet deadlines.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment, and able to juggle multiple deadlines.
  • Strong analytical skills and demonstrated ability to solve complex problems.
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness in problem solving and initiative to learn new skills.
  • Fluent English required, working proficiency in a second language (French or Spanish) is preferred.
  • Experience working in countries and regions that overlap with Chemonics current geographical footprint preferred.
  • Willingness to work overseas for up to 6 weeks per year; experience living or working in developing countries preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity.
