Job description

Position Summary/Objective
To further the mission of the camp through the planning and delivery of adventure activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities. Responsible for the management and physical operation of adventure areas including bouldering and climbing walls; and BB gun, air rifle, hatchet throwing, slingshot, and archery ranges.

  • Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude, behavior, and following of camp procedures.
  • Plan, direct, and supervise safe, fun, and educational adventure programs.
  • Write and implement activity lesson plans that meet and support camp and camper goals.
  • Deliver creative and adaptive adventure programs. Adapt activities as necessary to create a progression based on the needs and experience of the participants.
  • Apply basic youth development principles to empower campers, embrace diversity, aid in competency development, and build connections.
  • Train and supervise staff in adventure areas to provide a safe and high-quality program.
  • Evaluate abilities of campers and staff in activity areas and adapt materials to suit needs.
  • Ensure that campers and staff know and follow safety and educational procedures in adventure activity areas.
  • Ensure safety of all participants at adventure activities. Maintain high standards of health and safety for campers at all times.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of staff training.
  • Assist in the development and lead the facilitation of session-long progressive programming tracks.
  • Participate as a member of the camp leadership team to plan, direct, and supervise evening programs, special events, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned.
  • Set daily and session adventure activity schedules for campers and staff.
  • Set-up and manage adventure area facilities and equipment.
  • Teach and monitor proper use of equipment.
  • Conduct initial and end-of-season equipment inventory.
  • Conduct a daily check of equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair. Provide or file for any needed maintenance in adventure areas.
  • Submit orders for equipment and supplies when needed, ensuring timely arrival of materials.
  • Do what needs to be done so that every camper has a great summer at camp.

Education and Experience
  • Age 21 or older preferred.
  • Desire and ability to work with children outdoors.
  • Previous experience working in an overnight camp setting.
  • Current belaying/challenge course certification or willingness to obtain.
  • Current range safety officer certification or willingness to obtain (if at least 21 years old).
  • Current archery certification or willingness to obtain.
  • Experience in facilitating archery and/or other target sports and management of range and equipment preferred.
  • Experience in facilitating climbing walls and management of facilities and equipment preferred.
  • Current CPR/first aid certification or willingness to obtain.
  • Must be willing to become a member of Girl Scouts.
  • Must be able to pass State and National background check.
  • Knowledge of the Girl Scout program preferred.
Work Environment
Operates in a professional camp environment and will live on site. This role occasionally uses standard office equipment such as computers and phones. Requires ability and willingness to work in various activity areas at camp in all types of weather including rain, extreme heat, and cold. Must be able to move around the camp property to assist campers in their activities and spend a majority of hours each day standing and interacting with children.
Work Schedule
  • Position requires flexibility with schedule, typical schedule is Sunday through Friday, though some Saturdays may be required.
  • Position requires living on site and working evenings.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position will help supervise overnight camp counselors and activities assistants in their responsibilities at adventure areas.
Compensation
  • Room and board
  • $75 per day (position requires a 6-day workweek)
