Job description

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) serving Foregut (Red Team) and Bariatric Surgery (Purple Team) is a faculty member credentialed and privileged to serve as a licensed independent practitioner and is a member of the OHSU (Oregon Health & Science University) Professional Staff practicing in accordance with the respective bylaws.

 

The APP in this role will provide medical management to inpatients on the Foregut and Bariatric surgical services on the acute care units. Role includes, but is not limited to: rounding on a daily basis with team and/or faculty, developing and implementing, in conjunction with faculty physicians, clinical plans of care and/or protocols for inpatients on these surgery services with common conditions/diagnoses/procedures; educating the house staff and nursing unit staff on these protocols, with the goal of enhancing quality of care, enhancing quality of patient services, and decreasing length of inpatient stay; working actively with hospital and unit staff to rapidly develop and implement discharge plans for inpatients and to address length of stay issues.


Procedural duties include wound care (dressing changes, debridement, wound vac), enteral tube placement and/or exchange, drain management, etc.


The Foregut/Bariatric APP shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university's missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach, and public service. The Foregut/Bariatric APP is expected to comply with the scope of practice, other laws, regulations, OHSU policy, and other applicable professional standards of practice.

 

The Foregut/Bariatric APP delivers healthcare services to individuals within the scope of their license, provides advanced education to students, peers, and others; and may contribute to new knowledge and/or technology by conducting or participating in scholarship. Involvement in National/Local Bariatric, Foregut and/or surgical organizations is highly encouraged.


Schedule: 4 Ten-hour days per week or 5 eight-hour days per week - Mondays must be included. No Call.


Clinical Activities (not related to teaching or research): Assure the safe, efficient, high quality and customer oriented management of patient care to identified patient populations, including but not limited to completing a comprehensive assessment of the patient’s status; developing, monitoring and revising, as appropriate, an evidence-based treatment plan that addresses diagnoses, patterns of disease, risk factors, and treatment alternatives; treat many common acute and chronic health problems; interpret diagnostic tests prescribe and manage medications and other therapies, provide health teaching with an emphasis on prevention of illness and health maintenance; and, refer patients to other healthcare professionals as necessary.

  • Knowledge and competency in basic management of postoperative Foregut/Bariatric surgery patients.
  • Educates the patient and families throughout their stay for discharge
  • Assures effective and efficient workflow and length of stay by partnering with the discharge case manager daily and at interdisciplinary care coordination rounds

Scholarship (improvement science, research, writing, abstracts, grant supported work, presentations, etc.): Keep abreast of changes in field and applies knowledge to identify and recommend enhancements to clinical quality, patient experience/satisfaction, length of stay and to achieve improvement that demonstrates a higher standard of care. Assesses and recommends initiatives to improve performance indicators related to patient experience, quality, and costs.
Professional development meeting the expectations of ongoing certification. Demonstrates success or productivity in the field as evidenced by securing research funding, publication in journals and/or other forms of peer presentations.

  • Actively contributes to Quality Improvement clinical projects. Collaborate with residents to support research endeavors (when appropriate).

Teaching/ Clinical Supervision: Support OHSU’s academic missions by participating in the design, development, and assessment of program curricula for professional (Advanced Practice nursing, medicine, and physician assistant) specialty areas; including course objectives, instructional methods, learning outcomes, projects, and assessment measures. Teach program courses as needed according to specified learning outcomes; academic advising and career related counseling for students; monitoring student retention and identifying and assisting at-risk students.

 

Deliver individual instruction to support fellows, residents, graduate APP students, and other clinical learners to support their personal program of learning in the applicable specialty area. Provide instruction and review of the practices, policies, and procedures in a variety of functions; including but not limited to development of treatment plans, interpretation of clinical diagnostic data; developing orders; patient and family communication and education; management of medical equipment, electronic medical records; performing procedures, and transitioning patients to the next level of care. Assures adherence to the specialty specific protocols, best practices, quality, and organizational indicators. Provides input to the
performance of the resident or graduate APP student as a provider or graduate APP student provider in the practice setting.

  • Creating pathways and protocols to standardize care for Foregut and
    Bariatric surgery patients. Updating existing pathways/protocols. Creating Order Sets to facilitate standardized care. Participate in service specific tumor boards as well as Bariatric High-Risk Committee.

  • PA-C, AGACNP, ACNP
  • Current licensure as required by specific Advanced Practice Provider governing board(s).
    • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

  • Proficient in the use of computing hardware and software, including personal computing equipment, electronic medical record, word processing and spreadsheet software.

  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation


  • Prefer 2+ years clinical experience as an APP
  • Quality improvement experience
  • Counseling or patient education experience
  • Experience running a support group
  • Experience in the Microsoft Office Suite of products.
  • Experience using Epic EMR
  • Nurse Practitioner National Certification, Oregon Nurse Practitioner license with prescriptive authority or Physician Assistant license with certification
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
