Duties
Assignment to the Advanced Practice Nurse IV (Certified Nurse Anesthetist) Educator-Coordinator role must represent a significant commitment to the education of students, beyond the occasional preceptorship. The Educator-Coordinator must also demonstrate a commitment to in-service training for staff, and facility continuing education in order to provide accurate information to the population serviced.
Duties of this position include but are not limited to:
  • Administrative and technical responsibility for maintaining professional standards of practice in accordance with the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA). This may include development of the orientation programs for the student, journal club, scheduling, counseling and grading students, monitoring cases, assisting with research projects, coordinating with didactic instructors and clinical anesthesia staff for student progress.
  • Assists and provides development opportunities for primary clinical instructors and other department members to maintain their skills and keep current with progressive technical knowledge.
  • Supervisory obligations for the Anesthesia Technicians within the service. Including the in-service requirements for those employees as well as developing and leading process change.
  • Meets the demands of customers while supporting VA missions. Consistently communicates and treats customers (veterans, their representatives, visitors and all VA staff) in a courteous tactful and respectful manner.
  • Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures.
  • Handles conflicts and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately
  • Serves as an interdepartmental liaison, interfacing with other departments such as nursing, surgery, PACU, outpatient surgery, admissions, administration, laboratory, pharmacy, to incorporate the expertise of all disciplines in a comprehensive, integrated approach to care.
  • Developments, implements, and evaluates an on-going updating of the clinical curriculum and evaluation.
  • Provides advice and assistance to other Nurse Anesthetists in unusually difficult or complex cases.
  • Performs clinical and didactic teaching, commitment to in-service training for staff, and facilitate continuing education.
  • Provides feedback to students, faculty and the Program Director in a timely fashion.
  • Administers, evaluates, and provides sound statistical research in the field of anesthesia.
  • Implements educational strategies to meet changes, clinically, academically, and professionally, related to nurse anesthesia.
  • May chair or co-chair graduate level research in order to assist students in researching, reviewing/approving research proposal and finished product.
  • Supports and prepares students for the program's accreditation process by the COA of Nurse Anesthesia.
  • Facilitates communication between students, faculty, and other site coordinators to oversee/manage the clinical education of students.
  • Precepts CRNA students, and mentors Nursing students. Participates in the ongoing education of clinical staff through the available modalities of training including Simulation, Computer, and hands on learning.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and ability to teach effectively and creatively.
  • Establishes an active professional involvement with the academic community.
  • Identifies educational needs based on quality evaluations and trends noted to improve overall performance of the Medical Center.
  • Develops, Implements, and evaluates an on-going monitoring program of continuing education for current CRNA's required CEU's according to the NBCRNA guidelines.

Requirements

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
  • English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN ) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE ); OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6); OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant an appointment as a Nurse who has completed an associated degree/entry level Nursing education program. Credit for foreign nursing education higher that associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware ( ICD ).
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates who otherwise meet the basic education requirements, but do not possess the required licensure, may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level applicable to the completed nursing education as a GNT on a 120-day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case-by-case-basis.)
  • Graduate of an accredited nurse anesthesia educational program approved by The Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Education Programs (COA). The COA is currently located at 222 South Prospect Avenue, Park Ridge, IL 60068. Additional information may be obtained from http://www.coacrna.org. (Masters or doctoral degree required for APN Certified Nurse Anesthetist).
  • License and Certification for APNs (CNAs) (1) License. All APNs (CNAs) must maintain an active, current, full and unrestricted license to practice as a CNA or equivalent, in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.(2) Basic Certification. All APNs (CNAs) must maintain full and current Certification by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA) or an equivalent Nurse Anesthetist certification recognized by the COA.
  • On and after May 4, 1993, certification by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Education Programs (COA) is a requirement for employment. This requirement does not apply to non-Certified Nurse Anesthetists employed by VA as a Nurse Anesthetist prior to May 4, 1993 and continuously thereafter. Any Nurse Anesthetist who leaves VA employment or vacates the Nurse Anesthetist occupation for another VA position, must meet the current requirement of certification for re-appointment as a Nurse Anesthetist. The COA is currently located at 222 South Prospect Avenue, Park Ridge, IL 60068. Additional information may be obtained from http://www.coacrna.org.
NOTE: Grandfathering Provision - All persons currently employed in VHA in 0610 series and performing the duties as described in the qualification standard on the effective date of the standard (1/29/2024) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade held including positive education and licensure/certification.
APN (CNA) IV, Educator Coordinator Experience/Dimension Requirements-
(A) Meets basic education requirement for an APN (CNA); AND,
(B) Four years of APN (CNA) progressively responsible assignments in clinical, administrative, education and/or research related to CNA practice, one of which is specialized experience equivalent to the APN (CNA) III grade level; and
(C) Meets all Nurse IV knowledge, skills and abilities for the assignment (listed below).
APN (CNA) IV, Educator Coordinator Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requirements:
(A) Ability to develop, implement and evaluate a clinical curriculum and provide feedback to students, faculty and leadership in a timely fashion.
(B) Ability to provide mentorship regarding investigating, evaluating and translating evolving research findings for implementation into clinical practice, quality improvement, policy development, system transformation and enhancing efficiency, effectiveness and patient outcomes.
(C) Ability to conduct, collaborate and assist with approved research and scholarly projects that enhance students and providers' knowledge and expertise in the profession and the missions of VA. May chair or co-chair graduate level research and/or scholarly projects to assist students in meeting program requirements. This may include mentorship in research/scholarly project development, literature search/review and evaluation, approval processes, scholarly writing, implementation and completion/defense.
(D) Skill in investigating and advancing education related to current anesthesia practice for healthcare providers both within and outside the anesthesia specialty.
(E) Knowledge to implement educational strategies to meet changes clinically, academically and professionally, related to anesthesia.
(F) Ability to perform clinical and didactic teaching, in-service training for staff and facility continuing education to provide appropriate information to the population served.
(G) Ability to serve as interdepartmental liaison to incorporate multidisciplinary expertise in a comprehensive, integrated approach to care.
(H) Skill in providing guidance and assistance in unusually difficult or complex anesthetic management.
(I) Knowledge to provide support for preparation of an educational program's accreditation process (i.e., by the COA).

Physical Requirements: Physical and mental stamina sufficient to diligently monitor the anesthetized patient for prolonged periods of time and have the ability to manage many stressful situations.

Additional information
Note: Must have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) prior to assuming clinical duties. The BLS requirement is satisfied by successfully completing an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Healthcare Provider Course or Military Training Network (MTN). The ACLS requirement is satisfied by attaining, and maintaining, current status through an approved AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support Course. BLS courses are normally offered within 1-5 days of entry on duty. No online certifications will be accepted
