Make the Road New York (MRNY) builds the power of immigrant and working-class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road New York operates community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; Brentwood, Long Island and White Plains, Westchester County. With a membership of 27,000, MRNY tackles the critical issues facing our communities, including workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant rights and civil rights, TGNCIQ justice (TGNCIQ = transgender, gender non-conforming, intersex and queer), public education, health care access, and immigration reform. MRNY is a newly unionized workplace, currently negotiating its first Collective Bargaining Agreement.
MRNY is a multi-service organization. Our member-led organizing committees -- which work on the issues named above -- implement strategies to combat shared problems, and develop leadership and the capacity for civic participation. We also provide an array of high-quality bilingual services: We offer English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), computer literacy, citizenship preparation, and in-school and after-school youth programs. We have a robust legal program that offers direct representation across a spectrum of practice areas, including employment law, immigration law, housing and benefits, and TGNCIQ civil rights; we also take on impact litigation as a strategy for achieving broad change. Our health program offers facilitated enrollment into health insurance programs and SNAP benefits, a community health worker home visit program, nutrition education and emergency food pantries, health care navigation, and more.
The Adult Education team is comprised of instructors, admin staff, data staff, case managers and program managers. We run classes in all 5 of MRNY’s locations and our Queens office is the location where the largest number of ESOL and Civics classes are offered. Our team collaborates often with other MRNY teams to ensure that the students in our classes get the educational services that they need as well as other information and opportunities to engage in community life.
Current Opening:
The Role: The Adult Education Admin Assistant will work with the Adult Ed Admin team to ensure that all administrative aspects of the team’s function are carried out smoothly- including outreach, pre and post testing, initial registration and re-enrollment, as well as grants management and compliance.
Schedule: MRNY staff are currently working under a hybrid model, which allows a minimum of two days per week in their designated base office.
During different times of year, especially during periods of program post-testing, re-enrollment, and intake, program administrative assistants will be required to be in person more in order to meet all job responsibilities as needed. Though the schedule of work trends more to 9-5 or 10-6, evening and weekend work hours are required throughout the year depending on the program’s needs and the nature of the work being focused on at that point in the year.
Location: This position will be based at our Queens office and will include work assignments in our other program sites (Brooklyn, Staten Island, Long Island, Westchester) as needed by the program.
Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Call students on program waiting lists to provide information about classes and schedule intake testing appointments
- Conduct Best Plus pre and post-tests on site
- Complete intake paperwork and database data entry for registered students
- Assist with street outreach efforts in the local area as needed
- Support class instructors with program requirements including attendance management and enrollment management
- Carry out administrative responsibilities including filling out forms, managing phone calls, photocopying, faxing, scanning, printing, filing, and other tasks as needed by the program
- Support with tasks of program quality review, preparation for funder site visits, etc.
- Support in the preparation and facilitation of activities as part of admin and Adult Education team meetings
- Support volunteers working with the Adult Education program in administrative projects and class based projects
- Support interns working with the Adult Education administrative team including training, trouble-shooting, and team projects
- Support Adult Education team training initiatives, projects, and presentations in remote and in-person settings[1]
- Attend program trainings and meetings as needed
- Maintain communication with other MRNY departments including HR and IT/tech support for any needs that arise
- Assist in program development by participating in on-going reflection and change making process
Requirements
- Eligible to work in the US
- HS Diploma from the US or another country
- Bachelors’ degree, with 1 year of experience
- Fully bilingual in English/Spanish - reading, writing, listening and speaking
- Strong Tech skills including: Strong skills using with most or all : GSuite, Microsoft Office, Canva, Box, Zoom, and Google Voice
- Full vaccination with an FDA approved COVID-19 vaccine prior to the first day of employment.
- Comfort and speed with data entry
- Preferred: Experience working in immigrant services and/or community-based social justice organizations, Experience engaging in collaborative project development and educational programming/human services delivery with team members

Salary & Benefits
Starting salary is based on a scale set by a democratically-elected personnel committee and will depend on factors such as experience and education. MRNY offers an excellent benefit package including health insurance, 401K, and generous paid vacation, sick, personal days.
