JOB PURPOSE:
To assist the Program Leader in activities and duties assigned for Day Break, the therapeutic Day Program for young adults with disabilities within our member park districts.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
- Have an interest and commitment in working with individuals with disabilities.
- Must have a basic knowledge and understanding of recreation programming for individuals with disabilities.
- Must demonstrate enthusiasm, strong interpersonal skills, communication skills and ability to work effectively with people with disabilities, FVSRA staff, FVSRA member agency staff, parents/guardians, participants, community agencies, and members of the public.
- Must have good organizational skills and demonstrate the ability to work independent and solve simple to complex problems.
- Must demonstrate dependability, promptness, and punctuality.
- Be a team member, promoting group cohesiveness.
- May be asked to step into a leadership role for specific activities or when the leader is temporarily unavailable.
- Be safety conscious.
- Must display confidence, maturity, and flexibility.
- Ability to engage in activities requiring physical exertion.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Adhere to all FVSRA safety policies and procedures
- Review and understand participant's Annual Information Forms (disability, allergies, medications, seizures and behaviors).
- Must demonstrate the ability to follow directions of the Day Break Program Leader and carryout such instructions in a safe and appropriate manner.
- Must be able to communicate regularly with Day Break Leader regarding any program-related concerns and direct any questions or concerns to the Day Break Program Leader.
- Attend meetings, in-services, trainings, and orientations relating to FVSRA when required.
- Responsible for participation in all Day Break activities including swimming and fitness activities.
- Responsible for proper use of all equipment and retuning it to its proper storage space.
- Immediately report all accidents and unsafe conditions to the Day Break Program Leader.
- Must assist participants in the pool on all swim days.
- Expected to motivate staff and remain enthusiastic throughout the Day Break program season.
- Responsible for leaving the Day Break facility clean and organized at the end of each day.
- Maintain a safe and secure environment and experience for participants.
- Must be able to work under stressful situations.
- Provide physical and emotional support to the participants when working and participating in activities requiring assistance.
- Assist with participant daily living skills and personal care needs such as feeding, changing, toileting or participant transfers.
- Must be able to respond to the needs of individuals with disabilities.
- Maintain constant communication and quality customer service with parents, staff and participants.
- Treat public complaints and concerns with the utmost attention. Is courteous in all cases.
- Perform other duties related to the Day Break Program Leader when necessary, or duties in the best interest of the Association when requested by the Support Staff Manager or Adult Coordinator.
- Record and report hours worked on a bi-weekly basis.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The Day Break Program Assistant must, with or without reasonable accommodations, be able to perform the following functions:
- Gather, load, transport and set-up equipment and supplies for activities.
- Supervise individuals, including at times the use of physical restraints.
- Physically assist individuals in wheelchairs by pushing, pulling or providing stabilization on unknown terrain.
- Physically transfer individuals from wheelchair to chair, into and out of vehicles, from pool deck into pool, in washroom facilities, etc.
- Lift and carry as much as 50 pounds for as long a distance as 300 feet.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The employee may be exposed to elements when loading and unloading participants or when assisting with outdoor functions. Most activities are performed indoors; these conditions include lighting and temperature.
