Job description

The Morton Arboretum is a world-renowned nonprofit organization and botanical garden located just outside of Chicago in Lisle, Illinois, that is dedicated to protecting, growing, and appreciating trees. We are seeking a talented coordinator and educator to advance the Arboretum's learning opportunities for college and adult learners, both in-person and online. In addition to supporting nature-based programs and experiences based on the expertise and resources of The Morton Arboretum that provide memorable experiences and build affinity for trees and nature for diverse audiences, this position will be involved in shaping, launching, and supporting new internship opportunities for college learners at the Arboretum. A successful candidate should be organized, detail-oriented, customer service-minded, and enjoy collaborating with colleagues. You'll be part of a great team working together to make the Arboretum exceptional.
Position Summary: Coordinate and assist with educational opportunities for college and adult audiences at The Morton Arboretum. Facilitate access to educational opportunities and internships for college and adult learners, with an equity lens, through collaborative efforts with internal partners and partners in the community. Provide curriculum and logistical support for nature-based programs and events based on the expertise and resources of The Morton Arboretum that provide memorable experiences and build affinity for trees and nature for diverse audiences.
Essential Functions:

  • In collaboration with the Adult Learning team, coordinate and help develop and implement programs for college, professional, and continuing education learners, including onsite experiences, classes, workshops, conferences, events, internship, field trip, and outreach opportunities.
  • Coordinate the recruiting, hiring, and onboarding process for interns, certificate students, and Arboretum affiliates supported through Adult Learning. This may include coordinating application review and interviews, welcoming and onboarding new interns, certificate students, or affiliates, ensuring all necessary paperwork and related requirements are completed, and serving as a professional mentor as needed. Assist with tracking fellowship budget and payments to fellows.
  • Work with the Human Resources and People and Culture department, program mentors, and other program areas to develop position descriptions and work plans, facilitate communications, provide professional development opportunities for program participants and mentors, and ensure successful fellowship experiences.
  • Plan and carry out successful logistics for internship, onsite, and offsite programs and events for college students and adults.
  • Understand any relevant contributed funding guidelines and reporting requirements, and support raising and reporting on contributed funding as needed. Work with the Registrar's office and the Manager of Adult Learning to maintain student records, collect program data and metrics, and draft reports.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and community partners and affiliate societies to identify opportunities for expanding access to nature based experiences for college students and adults. Support partners and affiliate societies as directed.
  • Assist with developing and implementing in person and online experiences and learning opportunities using a range of educational and media strategies. Represent the Arboretum's programs onsite and in the community as needed.
  • Assist in administrative tasks, volunteer and group request scheduling, program communications, project and supply management, and other tasks associated with programs for adults. Interact with guests, participants, volunteers, and instructors and answer inquiries.
  • Demonstrate alignment with the Arboretum's employee core values to be inclusive, take ownership, work together, keep learning and make the Arboretum exceptional.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred. A background in biology, environmental studies, or education preferred. 2+ formal or informal program facilitation or teaching experience required. Previous experience in a support or other role with a clear demonstration of project management skills required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills required; strong communication skills in both English and Spanish preferred. High level confidentiality, organizational skills, detail orientation, strong interpersonal skills required. Ability to learn specialized database software for managing student records and registrations and other software is required. Must possess a valid driver's license, which is subject to insurability and an annual Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) report. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google applications is beneficial.
Success Factors: Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work in a team environment with all levels of internal staff and fellows, as well as with external professionals. Ability to nimbly manage complex tasks and concurrent projects, effective time-management skills, and a positive and flexible approach to the job. Ability to make well-reasoned independent decisions when circumstances dictate. Experience and comfort with customer or educational records management and learning management system software and/or experience developing or administering digital learning content preferred.

  • Physical Demands: Requires some physical activity: limited lifting and carrying (up to 20 lbs.), walking over all types of terrain, and some travel by car.
  • Work Environment: Office environment and Arboretum grounds. Work is performed primarily indoors, with regular outdoor activity also required.
  • Equipment: General office equipment, two way radios, and Arboretum van and/or utility vehicle.
  • Schedule: This position is hybrid-eligible and has an expected schedule of Tuesday to Saturday.
