The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is seeking applicants for an Administrative Specialist II for the North Carolina School for the Deaf.
This position is a 12-month. Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 5:00pm.
The primary purpose of this position is Salary Grade: NC09

The primary purpose of this position is to perform multiple functions and administrative tasks to support the School's Director and the senior administrators to develop and implement the total school program.
  • This position serves the administrative leadership team to implement centralized functions requiring expertise in compliance following policy and procedures that regularly includes handling confidential information.
  • Functions include contact with the public, responsibility for composing, maintaining, and updating records, reports, school wide program information for external stakeholders, including the State Board of Education, Department of Public Instruction, NCSD Advisory Council, legislators, parents and alumni.
  • This position is responsible for regularly organizing and updating policies and documents according to the laws and standards of state, federal and accrediting agencies.
  • This position requires independent decision-making, ability to organize and prioritize tasks.
  • The individual must regularly schedule meetings, develop agendas with administrators, and prepare materials and advertise public meetings, record and publish meeting minutes.
  • This position supervises and/or coordinates the work of the agency administrative specialists' team in order maintain priorities, meet business needs and accomplish project deadlines.
  • This position also supervises and/or coordinates the resources and work of the agency administrative specialists team related to event planning and scheduling.
  • This position serves as the Pre K liaison maintaining records, attending associated meetings, coordinating inspections.
  • This position also serves as a backup to the Transportation Coordinator assisting with scheduling and desk duty as needed.

North Carolina School for the Deaf is a residential school that provides elementary, middle, and high school programs for students between the ages of 3 (three) and 22 (twenty-two) for deaf and hard-of-hearing students from 46 of North Carolina's 100 counties. These students are from varying backgrounds and many have multiple disabilities. North Carolina School for the Deaf (NCSD) operates on a regular academic year, Sunday afternoon through Friday at 1:00 p.m. Support services and administration operate year-around.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
  • Understands and independently organizes relevant documents for Board of Trustees, audits, accreditations and strategic planning following prescribed legal and policy procedures.
  • Good interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proficient Computer skills using software to include: Microsoft Office, Office 365, Google Applications, and mass notification systems to develop individual and shared group workflow documents and calendars. Monitors progress towards project completion.
  • Communicates effectively using spoken language and/or American Sign Language and written English.
  • Uses correct/professional grammar, and program terminology to record and compose minutes, correspondence, reports and numerical materials. Proofreads Director's reports and correspondence.
  • Possesses high standards for professional accountability by planning and prioritizing the workflow in the Director's office.

Management Preferences:
  • Management prefers education, training and experience for and in an academic and residential setting for students with hearing loss.
  • The person in this position communicates on a daily basis with individuals with hearing loss. Management prefers intermediate to advanced competency in American Sign Language (ASL).
  • NC driver's license to operate State vehicles.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of related administrative experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
